I want to know what you think... what is the best civ-specific unit? I personally like the Hoplite, because it's good defense in the beginning of the game.

Defense of 3 that can be built right from the start with no strategic resources needed

Upgrades directly to a musketman, whereas its counterpart, spearman, must upgrade to pikeman first.

Legionary and immortals, while both effective, do not upgrade at all ever.

IMPI-- and this is why:

Because they can run away, as long as you use them in teams of two (so that the healthy one can cover the retreat of the damaged one), they tend to live long enough to upgrade. My goal with Impi is NOT to get the benefit of their battle prowess, but instead to get elite units that can yield "leaders" and Impi are the best units I have found for this end. (Extra advantage of Impi is that you can access them while you are still pre-republic and therefore you can go to war at will and stay at war indefinitely.)

Mounted warrior all the way all the day. You need to research two techs before you get it which means you get it soon, but not too soon. While your shamans work diligently towards horseback riding and your indulging yourself in your harem your peons are busy building more cities. When you do get your mounted riders and now im talking a bunch of them send em next door to ask for a cup of sugar, the crown jewels etc.. Unless you happen to get the greeks as your closest neighbour you get to watch your enemies in chains. The greatest advantage to these mounted fellas gotta be the ability to withdraw - attack with 3 or so and never lose a single one. Some of this can be accomplished by an early jaguar rush, but doing it with the mounted warriors allows you to actually reap the benefits of your golden age.

Immortals

they are very cheap to produce
therefore you can create a horde in no time
can inflict massive amount of damage
can be used all the way up to industrial age

I once held off 9 civilizations (they all banded together) against me until they sued for peace. I actually did more than defend, taking and razing a few cities!!

I notice that the German Panzer got many votes. Can someone tell me why it is good? I don't have anything against it, but I am curious.
