I like to play on Prince. (I guess thats what the 3rd eaist level to play on is.) I still haven't won.:(

Normally deity, although if I'm playing a torunament game and it's set to a lower level I'll play that (anything less than deity is very easy though).

you mean regent

i just won my first game on this level after having civ 3 for about 5 months

Regent.

The problem is not winning; it is enduring the dopey AI and the micromanagement tedium later in the game, assuming you do get a good game going.

At higher levels the AI cheating is too much, although I often tried Monarch.

The AI cheats, true. But I like their aggression at higher difficulties. It keeps me on my feet. I think monarch is perfect because the AI really isn't that bright. Regent is fine if I get a rotten start location, but otherwise the game gets easy.

I can win every time on Regent and most times on Monarch from any starting position.
Still recovering from my last GOTM as deity.

Awestruck by watching Aeson's deity game on Poly (its a cold place). How to win a deity dom/con game from an impossible starting point.... Read and learn.

Starting to play more games on Emperor. Playing tournament + GoTM games has definitely helped me to improve my civ shills considerably from when I started.

Regent used to be a challenge when I started - now I've gone up two levels.

Monarch. There's really little difference between Monarch and Regent though I find emperor very different from Monarch.

I'm not even going to talk about Diety.

warlord. (i accidently pressed prince on that poll...)
im still kinda new at this, trying to get a some skills. just got the game two weeks ago...

Monarch: It's a challenge for me. regent is almost certain victory, but in Monarch, i am one of many rather than a dominator.

Well A game for me may take up to months so I havent played all that much yet. So far Ive played 1 Chieftain game, 2 Warlord games and one regent...or 100 regents(I always **** up so I have to restart :( )
I only manage to build 1 or two wonders on regent... I could build them If I could yes, But im ages behind on the tech three becuz i find it hard to earn money on that level =/ Oh well.

I have played 5 games of Civ 3. Won at Chieftain and Warlord first time, after being pretty strong at Civ 2 -- usually winning at Emperor, didn't quite pull off a Deity win, though.

Just won at Regent, so will move to Monarch now. However, I won't be playing for about 6 weeks, because Civ is so f***ing addictive that I have a friend hold it from me now and again when I play it too much.

One good way to learn is to replay a tough GOTM again and again until you learn what works and what doesn't. You can use the spoiler board thread to get ideas.

It appears that any thing above monarch follows a very differnt pattern for successful play. Therefore even though I find it fairly easy to win on any difficulty I like to play Monarch, since it still seems somewhat normal(tech and AI cheat wise).

You are right. AI cheats too much.
I'll never play emperor or deity (I went monarch this weekend :) ). I always win, but AI cheats too much at higher levels.
And I like to win. I always try different approaches. Result: Always win, not big score, but a well organized empire that it's a pleasure to command!

If only the AI was actually smarter, rather than just relying on "cheats" or more accurately, advantages, to be more difficult.

Diety. The only level I would touch on Civ 2. After two months of owning civ3, december, I moved up to diety and I won't go back. I have had success using the english in ancient wars. It is more challenging not to have usefull UU (except if you can use the bombardment). I don't enjoy the advanced start the other civs get, but I do enjoy it once ive caught up

Deity!
AI just wages more wars and is way more aggresive. So diplomacy really is an important issue. The beginnig is always very tough - with no research and all these extortions. Winning the game is quite a challenge - not just a "how" question. But if you beat the game once - you can (more or less) always beat it!

Mostly Monarch nowadays.

In Civ II, I usually won on Emperor and sometimes on Diety (particularly on Continent (=Pangaea in Civ III terms) maps, for some reason), so when I got Civ III late last year, I was pretty confident at winning on Monarch. Well, got eliminated a few games in a row, so I went back to Warlord, and lost again! To a AI diplomatic win, but still ...

The next game was a win on Regent, and now I'm back on Monarch and sometimes win, sometimes lose.
