Fractal. Quite random map so it gives you some excitement of not knowing exactly what to expect, often with thin continents that provide delicious bottlenecks. And pangea of course. It´s the most fair map since the AI cant fight across water. Sure you can choose a map where you sit on an island on deity level and win every victory there is (except for domination ofc) without ever even seeing a single try to even put ONE unit on your shores during war, but i think that games should be challenging.

Pangea mainly, it for me is the most challenging.

I don't find much challenge in knowing what the map will always be. Sure Pangea will be different in a sense each time you load it, but you still know everyone is on a single landmass which allows a narrow-minded strategy ;/

I prefer continents, mostly because it gets really fun when you advance into the renaissance and colonizations begins. Continents are the best way to have a real earth map without already knowing what everything looks like.

Most of my games end up being Highlands (Dense Peaks in Ridgelines, Seas). The down side of that set up is that sometimes it spawns a lot of land that only one civ can get access to, which of course leads to a run-away civ. But then, I play on King, so that isn't usually a disaster, just a nuisance.

Oval. It's like Pangea but the bays that are carved into the continent makes navies more usefull.

Plyaing a game now where a bay almost goes into the center of the continent(where i dominate)

I like playing archipelago but I hate how the AI throw 3/4 of their units embarked in cluster ***** off their coasts. It's quite fun to DOW and sink them all, but I still dislike it.

The Civ AI has never been good at handling island or archipelago maps and V is no exception. Whenever I want an ego salving romp I play the Ottomans on archipelago.

Random always.
