so, which new civ IS the best? i don't have the game yet, and a lot of other people don't either, so include details of your favorite civ and their UU if you want to. please vote only if you've played the game and can make a good judgment.

i think the maya and the byzantines look good (of course no one else does though...;))

EDIT: i forgot about austria... you can just say that too. and also the older civs with new traits and tweaked UU's, etc.

i'd have to play them all first, i just got the game a few days ago.

buuut...i really like the byzantines and mayans so far.

Byzantine. Just because they are Byzantine ^^

Byzantine. in the island map, they are best of best. Seafaring is add 1 point to ship's movement. and Dromon is much better than galley.

I'm gonna go with the Byzantines, and like Akka, its just 'cause they are they Byzantines ;)

lol, talk about being biased :p
Mayans will go down in the history of Civ3 as being the only truely overpowered civ of the game. You can't compete with rapid expansion + free workers with (still) nice speed.

I haven't played the Mayans yet, but I kicked some serious backside with the Sumerians. Not only is agricultural awesome for cranking out settlers, but the cheap Enkidu Warrior guarantees you have a plentiful early defense force.

I'm loving the Portugese- when I play as them, I sell my world maps for monopolized wonder and goverment techs. :D

Hey, what about the old but now modified civ, like England or Celt. I'm in France, and Conquest is getting late here.... I want to give a try to Seafaring, but i would have like the modified civ to be added in the poll. :)
Secondly, what about game balance, sure the Mayans are the best by all account i read, but they seem overpowered. What's your mind on balance?

I gave the Inca a couple of tries, and the scout UU was actually pretty good! In both cases I scooped up about an amazing number of techs from the goody huts, so many that I only had to research 5 or so ancient age techs (I wonder whether Incans have a bonus chance of getting techs & settlers compared to other expansionist civs, to make up for their UU's lousy stats and high cost?) and the ability to sprint over mountain ranges is better than I thought. Civs not being able to trade maps and comms at the start also increased my power. The only problem can be triggering the golden age.

As for all civs, the Celts seem to me to be best now, being agricultural and religious, with a great UU.

I'm the lone Hittite voter... I like the expansionist/commercial traits coupled with a good ancient unit for higher difficulty lvls(Three-man chariot - 2 movement of course but the 2 def is nice. Sadly its not UU but if you're efficient you'll never need to ;))

Starts with pottery/alpha which gets you granaries and on the road to Republic.

Disclaimer: Just got the game and haven't tried many others ... yet. :)

I like the Hittites also... mainly for the 3man chariot... man that thing looks great!

when i get conquests (and i WILL eventually... i hope-- i think!), i'll try not to play as the mayans first. maybe i'll try the sumerians, they seem kind of interesting.

I haven't played it yet, but I think Mayans will be coolest, that or the Dutch just for their UU, gotta love the Swiss.

The dutch because unless there's an Irish civ, I'm Dutch :)

I like the Austrian leaderhead too. Finally a man neither old nor ugly :p

About an amazing number...
Is that below a ca. overwhelming number, but above an impressive or there about number?
:p

It must be the Byzantines, because I can't be bothered even playing any of the others. I'm totally addicted to them. Every time I fire up a game I think "hmmm... I think this time I'll play... THE BYZANTINES!!"

I guess I'll get around to the others sooner or later.
