SP for me. While MP sounds intriguing, I just don't have enough contiguous chunks of free time to really get into it. I also have this feeling that, as players gain experience with the game, victory or defeat will largely hinge on micromanagement/optimization and alliances. I could be wrong, of course.

As with any MP game, you can't really expect to win playing casually... You gotta learn the ropes of online play, and after many games (many losses), you become a stronger player. Indeed, there's no way around it.

As for the chunks of time, i beleive Civ4 offers the possibility to save online games and resume them later... forming casual groups in which all players agree to "wait" for all to be present to play can be really fun, and games can span over really long periods of time...

I hope they have an option for cooperative play. That could be fun. Looks like the key to competitive play will be to start up early so you can learn the ropes along with the other players.

I have my brother sitting next door and a LAN modem with 6 plugs already installed with cables in our flat, I guess the most time it will be 2 vs. AI or LAn games with friends. Do succession games count as multiplayer?

I've got a full dozen people I know lined up to get Civ IV, so there's no way i'm going to waste my time on single-player if I don't have to. That said, I'll probably play a lot more single player when event-scripted scenarios start coming out.

Noldodan, I tried that Ferion game out. It was pretty fun, I played for a while but it just took up WAY too much time. Ya might have seen me in there, I was Pug Uglies. What they need is a SP version of Ferion!

wow that is a disappointing statistic. People love playing vs flags and triggers, more than a real human opponent.

Playing vs computers in any game bores me. Anyone else?

This is why they called EE2 a success. So many people still love single player.

SP. And can someone convince dannyevilcat to change his avatar? That thing gives me the creeps every time I see it.:)

I like SP because you can start and stop whenever you like. MP games give you human oppponents, but in alot of games you just end up getting your ass kicked by uber addicts and people with cheat programs. MP games are certainly NOT for the casual gamer. It sounds like with Civ4 you can play quick 2 hour games, and although you will always have uber addicts to contend with it's probably tougher to cheat on this game than with other MP games. I can't wait to try it. :)

Well, you did a lot better than I did. And I guess you're the guy who gave me a referral point, huh? But really, you just made my day. Really!

SP at first. Then once the AI on noble gets too easy, I'll try MP, which will probably be the time the pitboss comes out, in which case, I'll probably just host a couple of continous epic games.

I will be primarily playing SP! I would love to give the MP a try though with Civ IV. Seems like a lot was put into it. I will of course make sure I have a thorough knowledge of the game before hand so I can throw down on all of you!

Start out with SP to get comfortable with game play. After some time get into MP. Although I haven't played MP since Quake during lunch time in the office a long time ago. But MP sounds very promising, especially that the games won't last forever. I'm not worried about ueber-addicts; I'm sure I can find some people I can at least sometimes beat. Getting your ass kicked ALL the time is no fun of course. And I hope there won't be a lot of cheating going on; but I'm not too worried about that.
Of course, I hope to see some CFC people to take on :D

Mp is where the action is at. Most people are sheep tho so it does not surprise me that most prefer sp.
