Who are we? (A poll, even if it doesn't look like one)

The different countries have their own commentary. I'm not particularly pleased with the current Swedish one, though he has his moments.

I must admit that I really do enjoy the whole thing, and take it at least semi-seriously. With the recent influx of new nations from eastern Europe, the old stagnant competition got some new life. And the revamping with a qualification round means that the final isn't as choke full of unbelievably false notes as it used to. But it would have been better if everyone had to pass the qualifiers, why would a good performance one year say anything about the next?

It gets more and more clear that the big nations (GB, Spain, Germany, France) don't take it seriously at all, which is a pity. In particular since the new eastern members of the EBU do take it seriously, for them it has a huge symbolic value as being accepted into the European community. There's a chance to use this for something positive, to foster a greater sense of kinship across Europe, but with some nations scorning it's mere existance...

.... but I guess we shouldn't take this thread any more off topic. ;)

I've been curious to hear more about that song contest. Here in New York hear tidbits now and again, but I must say I really have no idea what it's all about.

Interesting :)

Are we going to wait until General_W posts his choices? That may take a while.

He's probably making a stop-motion animation presentation to demonstrate his choices for Unique Units, using nothing more than play-doh and kite string :mischief:

I say we wait another 24 or 48 hours for General_W, I don't think there is any great rush.

@Peter, the wikipedia article on Eurovision Song Contest is pretty good if you want to learn more (having just spent 20 minutes reading it myself!).

@fe, the UK commentator is Terry Wogan, he's actually a radio presenter and tv chat show host. He's been doing Eurovision for years and his commentaries are legendary, I think he usually has a few glasses of red whilst he's doing it!

I have sent Gen_W an e-mail and I think this Barb thing will take a bit so I agree 2 day deadline.

 Wothout Wogan it would be terrible like a bad 'Idol', his comments really take the piss out of the other countries' presenters and acts.

Sorry for slacking on this!
Busy weekend – thanks for the e-mail Fe!

I vote:

1) Ottomans
2) France
3) Sumeria
4) Greece
5) Korea

:salute:

 Something like that!! ;)

Aww shucks. :)

Counting up the vote, I get our top 5 candidates to be
  • Ottomans (29)
  • Sumeria (29)
  • Korea (26)
  • France (24)
  • Greece (12)
Ottomans go before Sumeria since 5/9 have put Ottomans before Sumeria in their lists, indicating they'd prefer that (so we won't need a separate poll). I'm pretty satisfied with this list, it ain't perfect IMO but it's certainly something we can do something well from. :)

Spoiler vent steam :
Not starting with Alphabet is going to hurt... :gripe: ;)

I will give the team 24 hours to make a case against the list or the order before sending our Top 5 to Administrators.

We know that it will be Emperor level and Rik will be creating the Map.
Nothing else has been decided.

Dont' forget - this list doesn't garauntee that we won't start with Alphabet. If we wind up with the 3rd choice, we'll have it :)

So are we ready to PM this to RegentMan and Ginger_Ale?

EDIT: Xpost w/ Fe :)

Looks good!

Yaay for Eurovision!

Too late to vote?

Rome
Maya
Inca
France
India

Pretty random choices but I put Rome first since we seem to have a Latin motto. ;)

No alphabet is not cool. (Ah the dreaded double negative....)
Agreed Brother Niklas.

But since I just strolled into this team, I figured I should keep a low profile and let the others decide civ :)

Finally, we have an answer to the question posed as the title of this thread:

Who are we?

We are....

The Ottomans!

EDIT: Whooops! :)

I clearly didn't spend enough time reading that list

We are....

Korea  :kimchi: :juche: ;)

Eh, no. We are Korea.

What was the rationale for chosing them?

They have possibly the best traits, or at least very close to it. There should be more about the reasoning behind it somewhere in the threads, but in a nutshell I guess we learned from the last MTDG that peaceful building wins in the end. UU is not that important.

Personally I'm more than happy that we didn't end up being Ottomans, because that should put a huge target on the back of that team.

This game is already the funniest game I played in the recent months... :hmm: years... ever? :D

I've looked around a little, and a good place to start reviewing the course of Civ choice discussion is

And so it begins thread, starting around post 40.

Keep reading for a few replies, and it becomes evident that Korea had strong defenders and strong opposition.

Well - I'm happy with Korea... it will help give our team a bit more of a low profile until later in the game when our traits start to shine.
Sadly, I think our UU in near useless - but like has been mentioned, hopefully that won't be a big deal...

And we start with Alphabet! :D

Does this mean it's time to start our Grand Strategy thread?
:salute:
