To force you to build something in every city to unlock a national wonder?

That just completely goes against city specialization.

Why do i need to have a barracks in every city? Why have a library in my unit pump?

Last game i had problems getting my National Epic up, because midway through building it i got sucked into a war and captured a city which ended production on the wonder because... oops.. now i have a city without a monument.

Lame.

As a matter of fact, National Epic seems to be about the only one i'll proably ever unlock. As a monument in every city is a good idea. The others i'll probably never see. Im not going to sprinkle useless buildings (for that type of city), which comes with maintanence costs throughtout my empire for national wonders. It's just not worth the effort.

p.s. Where's Wall Street?

/disclaimer.. just a mindless rant.

I've been intentionally pushing trading posts and fishing boats in favor of, say, +3 or 4 food per turn where they could be farms. Get a maritime city state ally and 2 plots each city where you built trading post instead of farm is paid back. Also on newly planted settlers, granary has been consistantly falling down the list of priorities, favoring monument, workshop, library, market, depending what's around for a quicker bonus.

edit: oh my point is I think wall street would be too much

Thats all fine and dandy, but im talking about national wonders

When you cap a city, puppet it, it doesn't count towards your building count and as a bonus, won't affect your happiness, keep the city a puppet until you complete the wonder and then annex it and start on a courthouse.

Honestly, with the exception of maybe city states, I see no reason not to puppet every city you conquer immediately, even if you plan to raze it, you can still do that leter when your done your wonders or have the happiness to support the city's unhappiness modifier.

Library in every city sort of makes sense too, since science is all about population and about every city will get the population eventually. But generally yes it sucks :|

Seems like this feature was designed to OCC.
Really. Libraries are the only building really worth spamming, so the wonder related to them may be ok. To get the others you would have to waste ages building them, only to be murdered by the maintenance. Not really worth it, so I just skip them.

Actually, I like National Wonders, because they help make small empires feasible. It's a lot harder to build NWs with a large empire, but a large empire produces more science, gold, hammers, etc. just from sheer size. For a small empire, which can more easily build NWs, they help ease the disadvantages of not having a ton of cities.

Ding ding ding ding ding!! We have a winner!

But yeah, the whole "now you see it, now you don't" aspect to NWs is a little obnoxious.

Not to mention that if you raze a city, you can't build the NA until the city is gone because it hasn't got the building...

Oh, and the Hermitage thing: Monument -> Temple -> Opera House -> Museum, in all cities at that age? :s

I also hate to resort to puppets since they have a tendency of building useless buildings which take up limited strategic resources and drain maintenance.

^ Same here re: puppets, but it almost seems like a must if you have any kind of invasion going. And I like the feature itself, but adding a city governor who can say 'focus on culture / military / etc' would really help.

I agree. If I ever get my mod'n skills up there I'll probably change all these wonders to something like: Must have a library in all cities OR construct at least 8. So small empires with 8 cities or fewer can still benefit by building one in each city, and larger civs will still have build at least a set number. (8 was just the first number I was thinking, might need to scale it with the size of the map etc..)

I agree, although i don't think the national wonders quite accomplish that goal it is nice to see some advantages for small nations.
