I'm playing the windows version as Russia on Emperor doing a despot conquest rush thingy with just a lot of cities and i'm planning on building chariots with them, but all of the sudden (by the time I have about 15 cities) people in many of my cities are getting unhappy for no reason i can see! Like, the first and second people are getting unhappy throwing off all of my plans. What gives?

If your number of cities exceed a certain number, some citiziens will become unhappy in all your cities.
Try to calm them down by increasing the luxury rate.

BTW,welcome to CFC

Hmm, the manual doesn't say anything about that. Well, this will need some explanation: a few weeks ago I decided I wanted to play Civ1 again like old times, but I could only find the windows version and the DOS manual. I would rather have had the DOS one but couldn't find it. So, is this thing only in the windows version, or was it left out of the manual?

Well, without further details it's difficult to give any advise.

- What government type are you playing at? (Domination -> Despotism?)
- What's the size of most cities?
- Do these unhappy citizens cause a revolt? (I suppose so)

In Despotism you won't be able to support a large empire with huge cities. Build settlers to keep them small.
Also, use the martial law - garrison at least three military units in a restless city. This should calm the citizens down.
Finally, if it doesn't hurt your productivity, change farmes into entertainers. Or, try to get the Hanging Gardens WW and avoid "Invention" for a while, else get JSB Cathedral. Nothing better to keep my citizens quiet and happy. :king:

Hope, this provides some initial help.

why people become unhappy when you get too many cities...
I think the answer is: because Sid didnot want the military/conquest way to be too much profitable. Thus, the peacefull/dvlping_your_cities way is also manageable, and the game more equilibrated. So,
either: DONT build/capture MANY cities
or: build/capture many cities AND build simultaneously the hanging gardens
