Why care about bashing?

I often wonder about moderating on forums...not this one in partucular, but, shall we say, Internat-discussions rules, in general. Few forums I see are not moderated. I wonder why.

I can understand that a Forum/discussion board owner want to keep an eye on his/her forum to make sure it doesn't get filled with porn, illegal stuff etc, but I sometimes wonder why forums are regulated as such.

I have myself reported posts to moderators, both here and otherwise. Usually about some insulting language. But really, what do I care? If some punk on the other side of the world wishes death on me and my family, my country, my race and my religion, apart from a slow yawn while reading that post, it does not interfere in my life a bit.

I think this forum is well moderated, however, as in many other places, I can see posters "holding back". This is not necessarily a bad thing.

So, what do you think? Do threads attacking your values leave you sleepless for nights? Do you get personally involved in internet debates? Are they better then real life discussions, since you can meet people you normally would never speak to?

Moderators, I would like your input in perticular, since you obviosly have a better grasp of the moderating effort required to keep a forum running.

Bashing is mean-spirited and in poor taste. It's bad behavior.

Bad behavior drives away polite company, so a lack of Moderation would result in CFC losing good posters.

In CFC's case, it's existance depends on ad revenue -- the pop-ups and margin advertisers you see. They have content rules that Thunderfall must adhere to, or lose funding.

Since CFC is dedicated to a PG rated game that children play, the site should be PG or G-rated.*

*G = General audiences -- no one will be offended by it.
PG = Parental Guidance -- appropriate for children of all ages, but may contain some potentially offensive material. However it conforms to mainstream stds of taste -- only really touchy people would be likely to take offense.

I have no imput, the no bashing rule is what Thunderfall wants here, and eforcing it is what he gets from me.

Hmm, strange that this one was moved here...

as I said, I am not talking about this forum, but Internet discussions in general.

Agree with the first.

On the second, I would go further. From
my experience dabbling with some of the alt.xxx groups on the
Usenet, it gets to where *very* few serious posters go there, becuase 90% of the posts are "f--- you". So without moderation, this would IMHO be a worthless forum, used by f-bombers. And
as you say, the advertisers would quickly vanish.

@Zultan: I don't mind threads that don't agree with my values, since if the discussion is polite and reasonably well thought out, I for one don't get offended. But I intensely dislike bashing, and I'm glad that's screened out here.

The large number of INTERNATIONAL users is what makes this site worth coming too. You can get opposing views anywhere, but views on a topic from Sweden, Canada, Brazil and Malaysia next to the American view? :goodjob:

As for bashing, just remember... bad tatse deleted.

With the internet full of the kind of strange people it is inhabited by today any forum that is not moderated, or moderated poorly, will quickley degenerate into useless a spam pit. Moderators (and of course decent posters) are very important to any quality forum.
Unless u like spam. and if u like spam ive got 3 things to say to you.....oops better not type that or i might be moderated:p

and while im on the subject, to any CFC mods here, great work guys (and gals) keep it up:goodjob:

I do not have a problem with people that oppose my views, as long as they can justify their argument.

Because it detracts immature posters.

There are plenty of other forums if you don't like the way this one is moderated. They all use their own standards. My experience is that places where political discussion is frequently can't allow it or it'll quickly degenerate into country bashes, which apparently upsets people if that country isn't the U.S.

Agreed.

This is also (IIRC) a family oriented site. Consider children actually browse and post on these forums; it is in the best interests of everyone to keep the boards clean and well-moderated.

Jeez, I got modded in a thread that's ABOUT modding in general... :p And I thought I posted that before with the pic... Ah well, no offense intended.

Man, **** this thread, and **** you, ZultanofZex. Get your dumass self and leave this place, man, **** it. I give up, no sense in arguing with flippin' idiots like you. Dumass *****. Don't even know what he's talking about. Just shut up, for God's sake. Huh, wanna say sumthin? Huh, huh? Think I'm stupid? Bring it on, *****! And what the hell's up with your name? You think that's funny? It's ****in stupid, you moron.

That's my prediction about what this site would be like if there were no moderators. :) And this isn't bad because it's offensive, heck, why should anyone care? It's bad becasue if it were like this, you could hardly get any useful Civ information out of it, or any other good info/discussions. The site would be run by spammy morons who like getting as many *'s as possible.

@willj: geez...I think you released some tension there..

Nah, I just wanted to make my point in the most interesting way possible. ;) I guess it wasn't really necessary, though...

Damn right it wasn't necessary. Its so ****ing stupid. You don't mind if I add some **** to it, do you, ****face?

:ack:

:D
Oh well, I never knew that "Expert Flamer" was a site-featured default title. :mischief:
How many "*" did you post to get there?

OK, point proven.

However, on many places, political discussions have been outlawed due to "invites to fighting".

You have convinced met that "**** you, ****-head" should be moderated, but how about "I think *insert name of nation* stinks"?

I think it all depends on how you say it. If, for instance, you said, "Gee, I went to, say, Rome, and they threw stones at me all day." Then that would be different than saying "Hey, Rome sucks! Man, I hate that place!"

But really, it comes down to the fact that the first statement, no matter how well intended for conversation, will quickly result in nation bashing and a flame war. Better, I think, to not even open that Pandora's Box.

CFC is a lot bigger community then I want to be in. I like the smaller ones, where you can get more intimate and familiar with the people there. That being said, I stick around at CFC because of the strict posting rules. I deal with the rules because I agree with them, and it brings a more intelligent and mature poster to the forum. I have said in many posts that I was surprised and impressed that our younger memebers were a lot more mature then other forums. And you know what? I still am.

Intimate? :mischief:

CFC is intimate enough for me; lots of little half-hidden corners for me to talk about stuff with like-minded posters. ;)

CFC is not like many places. ;) And I like it that way - you can still have your political fights, but only when you do so politely, and intellectually.

That'll be moderated too - a ban will followed, if warning given is ignored. My tolerance for incivility is rather low...
