?!
I have been reading all our comments for last few days and…
I realized why civs are the best.
I believe it is because of its ‘SIMPLE COMPLEXITY’
YEAH! It is because the whole idea of the game is to:
build and manage cities, create empire, make friends and trade with them, make pacts and attack enemies. All of those (feel free to add more) things we have to do at once (that is the complexity) and all that can be done in a quite simple (read: enjoyable) way.

I am quite mystified by some of our demands ex: commandos, earth quakes, migrations of great leaders, the way combat should look, diplomacy…. and many more.
I think I will have to take one-month holiday to play one game of CIV4 (if all of those requests are to be met in CIV4). Do not get me wrong, I love discussions and new things, but “BALANCE” is the word I love and I would use here. We cannot put 10 games (ex. simcity, close combat, settlers, railroad tycoon and all the other games in ONE CIV.

My theory is that it's the totally unique "One More Turn" syndrome that does it. In any one game of Civ you're likely to always be building on several things- you always have several projects going.

Say your goal is to build a wonder before anyone else does. You try to bring in as many shileds as possible to the city that builds it, and you're well underway with only five turns to go. You're gonna quit for the day once you've finished building it. But then one of your scouts discovers a close, weakly defended enemy city... And you start building troops nearby, constantly fearful of him fortifying it from behind... The wonder is done, but you can't quit until you've resolved this conflict! But as you prepare for attack, you discover a new Advance, which lets you upgrade all your defensive units. So you start on that project, while completing the attack...

And so on. That, I feel, is the greatness of Civ. You never feel like you don't want to see what happens next.

Hi. Snapcase are you here as well? I thought that you were just a nationalistic Apolytoner.

My theory is that there are many types of people who like to play Civ: people who love good strategy games, people who are in it for the historical interest, and people who like empire-building. The Civ games satisfy all of these "urges" very well; not too many games can do that.

Hehehe, it seems everyone here knows why a bunch of fanatics like us still play an old 10 years game !

Let's not forget one big thing though... freedom! The freedom to buid your civilisation the way you want AND to rule it the way that suits YOU!

THE FREEEEEEDOM!!! BUT that freedom is going to be taken from us by adding those spec abilities!!! They want to tell us who we are and what are our best abilities. Yes, yes I know we can just turn them off- whooo hoooo!!!

I spit on you special ability doubters

- have you never played AOK.
I dont know whether civ 2 is the best game for the pc but it certainly comes close to AOK:Tc and I think civ3 will be so much better.

GO CIVILISATION

My favourites:

Single player: civ2. Strategy, depth, replayability, balance, divesity, fun.

Multi player: StarCraft. Strategy, depth, replayability, balance, diversity, fun.

Those are IMO the 6 most important aspects of a game. And very rare.

Another big plus, is that it is turn based.
It gives you time to think..plan..scheme.
