Why is the year always way off?

Civ3 is not meant to be historically accurate, it's meant to be historically authentic.

Personally, I don't pay attention to the year. I'd rather just see turn number.

Real world had much more disorder. The Great Library got burned to the ground. People just wanted to live and have things the way they were rather than push the knowledge/research envelope. Actually, in most of history scientific discoveries and research were not under the control of government direction or budgets. Often, discoveries were even suppressed.

actually its because we are playing the game on Regent so the AI doesn't get too many research bonuses... plus with raging barbarians, the standard REX build didn't work.

Tech trading means the years fly by faster than they did historically. That and the designers didn't want to have the pattern of just barely getting to the tech tree by the end of every game (want to have time to exploit all of those later age techs and other goodies!).

Play on chieftain, and you might not be able to reach the modern era.

Play on Sid level, and the modern era might be reached by 750AD.

Oh, Trip, your sig is too long BTW. Please reduce it.
