Why no ability for easy custom races?

Why does Civ4 not have a custom race creation option like Galactic Civ 2 has?

Surely this is an obvious feature to add to the game?

I'd quite like to create a custom race with enhanced features to put up against ordinary races played by the CPU, but on a hard difficulty level for example.

It would also stop all the requests about why isn't xyz country/religion featured.

Not all of us want to learn to mod the XML files etc.

I'm pretty sure there's a mod that does this. You should take a look in the Creation & Customization subforum.

Enthusiastic thumbs up to top statement.

Civ4 is a nightmare for those of us that don't breathe code for a living. All I want is a screen with a heap of prompts, so I can put in names, check buttons for "expansive" or whatever - like in Civ3??

XML is not code. It is the text equivalent of those prompts and buttons. Doing this uysing the existing tools would take a minute or so.

I do miss being able to pick your civ, pick the civs your playing against, pick your color, and being able to create your own unique civ.. I think it would be a easy attachment that would improve the game...

Well, you can play a custom game and thus choose the civs you fight against. Then there's the world builder... although I suppose that only goes so far. I don't particularly feel like looking at XML. Then again, I suck at computer-y stuff.

Glayvin :lol:

Well you can Customize the Name of your Civ+Leader

You can't customize Traits because the traits aren't balanced alone
Traits are balanced in combination with each other and with UUs

The point is it should be made as easy and quick as possible. All from the in game start up interface. And if I want to unbalance the civs, that should be my choice :)

If it's so easy to do, it should be in there :)

Go to the LeaderHeadInfos file (under Assests, XML, Civilizations), and copy it into CustomAssets. Pick a leader and edit his traits however you wish, then play as him.

what would the point of playing be, if you knew you would win? besides, I'm sure people would be more creative than that, and the only place itwould really affect you would be the multiplayer, so just disable the option on multiplayer. i'd like this too, though, and it doesn't seem like too hard a thing to do...

Well the ability to have a Custom Trait, UU, UB, Starting Tech Combo would be good (perhaps that game gets no entry in the HoF File (or is entered as Cheater, Altered, etc.)) and is enabled for everyone or no one in multiplayer (it is one of the game settings.. allow Custom Combos)

You could even have Totally Randomized combos for the AIs (so you may end up sharing a continent with a Philosophical Industrial Montezuma starting with Agriculture and Mining a Keshik UU and Stock Exchanges v. a Charismatic Aggressive Washington with Mining, Mysticism, Praetorians UU and Sacrificial Altars)

OK definitely a good idea... Just make it somnething that has to be allowed at game setup (for Multiplayer) and goes in the same Hall of Fame as things that have been World Builderized

What you also need is 'skins' so that for a standard (non-Altered) game you can change not just the leader+Civ Name but also the Leader Picture (pick from a list), banner (likewise), Default City name (a list of lists), UU name (write in), and UB name (write in).

So if you want to play a Hebrew civ, and you figure that Aggressive + Spiritual, and a Swords UU fits them well.... then pick thae Aztecs, and change
Civ Name=Aztecs->Hebrews*
City List=Aztec->Hebrew/Israeli city list**
Banner=Aztec-> (bunch of others)**
Leader Name=Montezuma->David*
Leader Picture=Montezuma->Saladin?Ramses?Cyrus?Just the Banner?**
UU name=Jaguar-> your choice*
UB name=Sacrificial Altar->your choice*

* you type it in
** would be from a list of things available

And wala a Civ of your Choice
(Note could also be done with Existing Civs... you want to play Germany but think they are better represented as Industrial+Aggressive, Pick Napoleon, change the City list, Civ name, Leader Picture, etc.... you will lose the German Assembly Factories and the Panzer, but you will gain the 'Prussian gunmen' or whatever you choose to rename the Musketeer)

Or you could want to play a Civ but with no particular set of traits in mind... have the Computer pick a Random Civ+Leader, and then you change the names, Leader pictures, etc. to fit those of the Civ you want...

Or play both 'unbalanced' and 'skinned'.. That way you are always playing as 'the Scots' but they could be Financial Protective with Assembly Plants and Praetorians starting with Mysticism and Fishing, or any other combination that the computer randomly selects for you.

With those two methods of cutomizing: 'recombining' and 'skinning' the game would be Much more interesting and it should be in the Game setup [talking to those who talk of XML]

With only two traits per Civ I don't think this would make much sense. Not much to choose from.
And choosing traits and UU would be pretty unbalanced ( the mentioned aggressive Praet).

The OP's suggestion makes perfect sense to me. They could really keep it simple.

They could have one civ with a couple traits already assigned.

They could use a generic Citizen-Soldier UU that replaces something like the Spearman.
(or a worker with a warrior's defense)

You type the name of the Civ/Leader and choose from one male or one female figure that u can darken or lighten )

Have an already assigned color for this generic civ- how about a maroon or mint green.

the Unique building could be some kind of politcial gathering place- Town Hall or the like.

The Flag could be one of a few geometric shapes. (the u.s flag is just a star...)

Click a few buttons and ur off and going with ur civ of choice.

The civilizations that exist in the game were created to be fairly balanced. If you could mix any combination of traits, starting techs, and unique units, you could create an very unbalanced civilization. For instance, the Romans are given one of the most powerful unique units in the game - Praetorians - but they do not have a leader with the aggressive trait. Having a civilization with the aggressive trait and Praetorians would be completely unfair.

An unbalanced game may be completely unfair, but sometimes it can be totally fun too. What's the difference (considering AI) between playing below noble and being able to build agressive praets on higher levels? I didn't buy the game because it's so well balanced, fair or otherwise. MP games don't even interest me. I feel that with this game a lot of possibilities and options were ignored because of the MP-have-to-be-balanced-etc-etc reasons. Now thát's unfair... :)

So what?

Where is the problem, if Johnny Miller in Idaho wants to be aggressive and financial and have Cossacks? Does this harm my fun with the game in Germany? I severly doubt this....

With the World Builder you can wipe things off the map and move Holy Cities, THAT is completely unfair (the AI can't do it)

It would be best if this was done in a way that made it
1. mark the HoF with 'Scenario'/'Unbalanced Rules', etc.
AND
2. was prohibited in MP or was a specific Game type in Multi player*

So when you entered a MP game you would know whether it allowed custom traits, UU, UB combos or Not... and then you pick Charismatic Protectionist Skirmishers and pillage all the aggressive financial Cottagees and mines.
