Why play civ 3?

Just like you, I felt a bit uncomfortable in the beginning going from civ2 to civ3, except for feeling sympathy for your arguments #1 & 2, I was annoyed by the absence of caravanes (trade routes & rushbuilding of wonders) and diplos/spies. However when I learned more about it, I started to grow on me, and now there are times that my wife has to drag me from the computer.
My advice to you is to give the game a chance, after all you have only barely tasted it (I remember the first time I tried beer) and read all those great articles on this site. You may then change your mind...

#4 Technology through time
maybe its just me, but do you guys manage to get gunpowder before 2000 AD? didnt think so

Actually, out here in the real world, the steam engine was invented by Hero of Alexandria, right around the year 0.

Back then, nobody saw the practical applications. If somebody had, then the game of Civ3 would be different. We'd be seeing a different tech tree, where "Steam Engine" was in the Ancient Age instead of the Industrial Age, probably requiring both Iron Working and Construction in order to research Steam Engine, then requiring access to iron and coal before you can build railroads. :)

Makes ya wonder where civilization would be today, if the railroad had been invented two thousand years ago.....

The ability to rewrite history--get gunpowder in the BC years, get cars in the Medieval Ages, get tanks in 1700, build the Pyramids in England instead of Egypt....that's all part of what makes this game so addicting!

According to Firaxis, the human body is an ugly, ugly thing. (except for Theodora. Mmm...)

And she was designed by Breakaway, not Firaxis.

Regarding the scale thing - you are completely misunderstanding the man!!

2l84u just go into your civ.ini file and place the line

keepres = -1

if your computer resolution is above 1024*768 you will get a bigger view on things

Just my 2 cents - hope you will learn to like civ 3 :-)

Somebody help me out here. Ive played civ3 like 6 times and it really sucked, compared to civ2. I'm beginning to think everyone that plays civ3 should... well nevermind

To me, there is no comparison. Civ III is superior in almost every respect to Civ II. I think it might help if you stop approaching Civ III like it's Civ II. Things have changed (for the better). The Diplomacy and Strategic Resources alone, have made for a much more compelling game.

The fact that you didn't get gunpowder until 2000AD leads me to believe:

* You weren't trading with enemy civs enough.
* You weren't spending enough $$$ on research and/or you didn't have enough science related infrastructure.

Give it another shot, but this time approach it with an open mind. It might help to read some of the articles in the War Academy.

#1 Scale
Many features in civ3 give the game a small-scale feeling.
EX: the units visibly beat eachother, ruining the army-on-army style of civ2 (any imagination is destroyed by the fact that it is ONE person smacking ONE other person)

One person? How do you know that each unit doesn't represent a platoon, or a company, or, heck, even a batallion?

2|84u said:
EX: climb a mountain, see far (WTH? civ2 obviously had squares wider than 12 miles, making civ2 larger scale)

With good weather conditions, it's possible to see 50 miles from a mountain peak. Does this really effect your enjoyment that bad?

2|84u said:
EX: the city styles make the game feel less like empire-on-empire and more like city-state on city-state (fine if u want to play age of empires)

Hmmmm. This is opinion. Personally, Civ III feels the same as Civ II in this regard.

#2 Customization
no way, not gonna happen

Define customization. You can "mod" the heck out of Civ III.

#3 Realism
all the rulers are in cheap 3D animation. ok, there goes the whole official world war effect; you're not actually fighting real germans, dummy, cant u see hes a cartoon?

Uhhhh... you're not really fighting Germans no matter what they do with the graphics. What are driving at with this statement?

Oh gawd yes. With savvy play, and the right research paths, it's possible to win the space-race in 1500AD (if not before).

First of all, everything you said is completely opinion. Nothing in there is a fact. It's all just what YOU think is wrong with that game. Second of all, if you want to hate on Civ III, why don't you run along to the Civ II forum instead of a place where everybody else obviously likes the game?

i didnt mean that, i meant its not global-strategy b/c its too small!

If that's what you meant, then why did you say it was the "cheap 3D leaderheads" that ruined the effect? Did you accidentally forget to whine about the scale and put this in there instead?

And customization? What did you mean by "not gonna happen"? Did you mean YOU don't want to, or it can't be done? Because there are TONS of mods out there, many of them very high quality.

Oh, and just for the record, I live in an area that highly mountainous, and when I've been on snowboarding trips with my friends on the top of Hakkoda mountain, I could see for at LEAST 10 miles.
