In regular Civ IV I just double left clicked on a building/unit in city's queue and it went away. Now on Warlords I do this and absolutely nothing happens.

Yes, you can. Its just if you have only one thing in queue, then you cant cancel it. But if you have more things, you can cancel all but one.

You can "cancel" the only building in a queue if production hasn't actually started, i.e. in the same turn in which you selected it. Just select something else. But once a turn has passed and production has begun, all you can do is put something else at the head of the queue, when the "unwanted" job goes on hold - possibly for ever, if you keep on pushing it back. It'll never go away, though.

You can take it out of the queue forever - replace it, then just click on the item in the queue you want to eliminate. You won't get the production back. If the unit becomes obsolete, it'll go away. If it's a wonder, if the wonder is built elsewhere, you'll get gold for the (depreciated after 10 turns) production.

Shift+Click, Ctrl+Click, and Alt+Click all put an item in the queue at either the beginning, end, or "perpetually", I just can't recall which corresponds to which. If there's more than one item in the queue, click on an item to remove it.

I started to play CivIV Warlords with the BetterAI and when I couldn't stop the single production item, I thought it might be a bug with BetterAI. I am glad I found this thread.

That being said, I found a way to get around the problem. I switched to wealth and then switched to something else. No more problem unless you can't build wealth, culture, or something that can be quickly replaced.

There's also Alt+Shift+Click and Alt+Ctrl+Click which will put a perpetual build item either at the beginning or the end of a queue. Not necessarily in that order BTW.
