Have you noticed that a settler 'costs' two population points, but the city it founds starts out as a one-pointer! Do they use part of the settler to build the first buildings or something?

Ah, but did you notice that ciries with 1 population have two squares being worked, one for each food point it took to create the settler.
Obviously, one food point goes to the Urban population - this is what the number for the city refers to. The other point goes to the rural population, that remains constent regardless of the size of the city.
Ok there is some problems with this theory when culture expands, but i'm sticking to it!

Yes, The ones who found the city become cannibals, and thus kill the other pop. point to get the food and production from the centre square for the rest of theyre miserable pixelated lifes...

Oh yeah, and remember that there are about 5000 ppl buried in the great wall of china... Maybe it takes a lot of dead ppl to build a city...
