Purchased Game of the Year edition last night, and have not been able to get it to start for even the first time.
I've installed it three different times, the latest exclusively using ISO's of the three discs provided with the GOTY edition. NOTE: GOTY edition is shipped as version 1.61.
The problem is that once done with setup and installation, when I try to start the game, I get the initial loading screen, and that's it. No XML, graphics, python, or DirectX errors. I can sit and stare at the loading screen for a couple of minutes until Windows deems it as crashed, and Error 1706 is logged in the event viewer.
A search on this forum for Error 1706 gave me the idea to use ISO's. To start with, I made an ISO of disc 1 and tried to play from it. However, the game wants me to have the disc in drive D, which is my real disc drive--drive E is the virtual drive into which I mount ISO's. So I thought maybe I should install from E with the ISO's so that the game would know this drive exists. I just finished all this, and I am still having the same problem.
After this latest install from ISO's, when I try to start the game from my mounted (E: ) disc 1 ISO, it still asks me to put the proper CD-ROM into drive D, and when I do, I get to stare at the loading screen until either Windows or I get tired of looking at it.
To help you help me, here's some relevant info:
Windows XP Pro SP3
1.6GHz Intel Processor
1024MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon X300 (64MB)
I've updated to the latest DirectX using both the stuff on the disc and an installer from microsoft.com. My ATI video drivers are up-to-date. I am able to install and play the demo, which is what made me want to buy the real game. Also, I've noticed that my game directory looks weird. Here's a picture of it:
All of these shortcuts are broken. Specifically, _Civ4Config tries to link to "%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CivilizationIV.ini". And my "My Games" folder is empty. I think this might be because I've never actually played the game before.
Thanks for any help.
