Grumpy Old Griper
I play tennis every Tuesday night with three mates I grew-up with, and after playing we go to the pub and 'chew the fat' over a few beers. We talk about anything and one of the topics we will be discussing is who will win Wimbledon.
In the mens I would like to see Pat Rafter win but I'm not sure that his shoulder will hold out. Of the other Aussies Lleyton Hewitt is in very good form and must rate a chance, it's a pity he's still a such a 'tennis brat', but then he is young and like Andre Agassi might mature. Another Aussie Wayne Arthurs is a 'dark horse' and has the style of game that favours grass. The perennial favourites Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras must be a big chance.
In the womens the Williams sisters will be a chance along with a host of other Americans such as Lindsey Davenport and Jennifer Capriati (who has regained some of her old form). I will be interested to see how two very talented young players, Jelena Dokic and Martina Hingis go - both lack maturity and have a dippy parent to contend with, but both are a chance.
My predictions are:
Mens singles - Pete Sampras, outsider Lleyton Hewitt
Womens singles - Venus Williams, outsider Jelena Dokic
I'd like to hear your predictions and thoughts on Wimbledon 2001.
