Windowed playing?

You can't get true WIndowed mode. Civ3 was designed to be a full-screen application.

However, if you set your system resolution to greater than 1024x768, you can get a "pseudo"-windows mode. In the civilization3.ini file (or ptw.ini, or conquests.ini, as appropriate) add the lines:

KeepRes=1
VideoMode=1024

This will tell Civ3 to keep the system resolution (i.e., not force it to 1024x768) and tell it to run at 1024x768. This means you will have a 1024x768 "window" in the upper left of your screen that Civ3 is running in. The remainder of the screen is visible/available for you.

Thanks for the info, I'll try that as soon as I re-install civ. I kinda forgot to backup my original files and went after a few large WW2 scenario's and now it's all borked :p Oh well, no biggie.

If you have a piece of software called "Virtual PC" (and space to space for an operating system image), you can fake a windowed mode. The downside is that it'll need lots of ram, as it acts like another operating system/PC.

Whoah. 3 moderators in a five post thread.

Anyway, that's helpful. I was always wondering if there was a windowed mode.
