Has anybody been able to run CIV 1 in a window on Windows 2000. It demands that it runs in a full window, which of course is silly, I want naturally to run it in a window. :)

The only true way to run civ1 in a window is to use... an emulator!
You can even use a PC emulator for windows! No kidding, that does exist! Virtual PC emulates a PC on you PC. Don't laugh, you then have a virtual x86 processor emulated in a window, then you can install win2000 in that emulator and run civ1 in a window. Or even play Civ1 for macintosh too, I do that. It's easy to setup.

Look in the tech support forum for a link to a good emulator for PC, or try and find a utility. I may try and make one and market it. :)

P.S. If anyone has heard of such a utility please e-mail me or pm me.

I have been having trouble running Civ I in Windows 2000. Here's what happens:

I run the civ.bat file.

The options come up, I select VGA graphics, IBM sounds, and Mouse and Keyboard.

The little movie starts, I hit a key to skip it.

:P I get a bunch of gobbilty gook on my screen and nothing works. I have to use the task manager to exit.

Any suggestions?

System info:

Athlon K7 800 MHz
gEforce 4 64 MB video card (yum)
128 MB RAM
Cheapo sound card from Comp USA

Dunk:

If it's winciv, just run the .exe file, not the batch file. If it's civ for DOS, then I can't help you as I no longer have civ for dos and hardly remember it.

Go to Civ.exe
Right click on it, go to properties, program, advanced.
Click "MS-DOS" mode.
It should now run in DOS automatically.
Instead of going to civ.bat, always use civ.exe
Hope this works.

I did as you suggested. There is no "MS-DOS" mode to select.

Still no luck. :(

Ouch. Do you have the CD?
Could you restart your computer in MS-Dos mode and go to D:CIV/CIV?

If you've already tried this, sorry, but that's all I can think of.

I'm thinking about getting an old PC and sticking DOS 5 or 6 on it to play some old games.

I'm not too sure I'd like an emulator.

Yes, no DOS mode in win2k. There is a DOS-like interface though.

He he Caesar, you seem to forget there's NO more dos mode under win2k ;)

I'm used to Win98. Sorry about that one.

Why would anybody take away a useful feature (like DOS mode) in an "improved" version of something (like Windows)?

Makes no sense to me.

To start DOS mode on Win2k, hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and type 'r'. This will give you the 'Run' box. In the box type 'cmd' (short for command) and then enter. You should get the familiar DOS box pop up.

There is a "Command Prompt" in Windows 2000, but it's not "DOS mode". It's just a screen where you can type in commands instead of navigating with the mouse. I haven't tried using this yet. :) I just found it.

Windows 2000 is vastly better than 98 or ME. It doesn't crash since it's basically Windows NT.
