[WIP] Civilization V: Power and Consequence - active development

I'm playing as the Songhai, and I'm the only civ. Every city that the minor civs have founded has been an unused Songhai city name. My guess is that they're just pulling from a bank of unused city names for any civ in the game, which in practice will probably work just fine.

After 350 turns, they've long since used up the last Songhai city name, and have stopped founding cities despite having a halfway decent amount of unclaimed land available. I should also note that none of the city names have been duplicated.

So, basically, it looks like the Firaxis team has already done a lot of the hard work here. City-states don't do stupid things like try to use the same names over an over, and it doesn't cause the game to crash or anything when they run out of city names - they just stop building cities. Works for me!

Maybe you can look at the code and see if you can get the city-states to grab city names from civs that aren't in the game as well.

Eh, it might be kind of weird if you've got a game with Greece, Rome, and Carthage, and suddenly one of the city states builds New York. Faced with a choice between that and having them just take any unused names from the existing civs, I'd prefer the latter. Kinda makes it seem like it could've just as easily been one of your cities, and I think I like that aspect of it.

You could sort the civs into groups and pick from unused civs in the same group - if China is in the game, pick Korean, Japanese and Siamese cities.

It'd be work to get that working, but it'd solve the problem of New York in a Greece/Rome/Carthage game.

Yeah, I think that would probably resolve my objections. But that's something I'd do down the line - I'm anxious to get the real meat of this in place. If I'm not burned out at the end of that, I'll go back and do a second pass for stuff like this.

Absolutely.

True, something like that isn't particularly important. Leave it for later, or maybe if you get a team get someone else to do it.

That being said, I'll take a look at it. If I figure out something I'll post it back up here. No promises though, I'm no expert.

Sounds good. I'll take any help I can get.

Is it just me, or is that screenshot broken? I'm sorry to be beggy, but I think this mod will be cool, and I like me some good screenshots.
Edit: Nevermind. Looks cool!

Progress update: made the first custom DLL tonight. So far all I've done is just make it so you can't delete Great People; they can now only be killed or expended. Preventing them from being expended is the next step, and I'm already a decent way towards having a solution for that.

Stay tuned!

Glad to see some progress being made on this! The mod definately has promise, although it'll be interesting to see what the Great People changes do to gameplay. Couple ideas / suggestions:
Would you be interested in incorperating whoward's Great General changes to the DLL of this? He's changed it so that Great Generals spawn in the combat area as opposed to in a city. Also, would it be possible to give city states city lists instead of them taking city names from existing civilizations? For example, Sydney could have Parramatta and Manly, while Venice could have Malamocco and Eraclea

I'm not familiar with it, but yeah, I don't see why not (unless he objects). I'm getting a good deal more comfortable in the DLL source as I explore it and play around with things.

I actually really like the sound of that. How about this: if somebody else (you?) comes up with, say, 10 unique federation cities for each city-state, then I'll find a way to incorporate those as the preferred city names when those city-states found additional cities.

Another progress update!

Dug a bit deeper into the DLL source and made a few changes to make Great People non-expendable and non-giftable. This means that they can now only be killed, which is a significant step towards the new version of Great People.

In my test scenario, I've got a Great General running around putting citadels up everywhere, a Great Artist who grants me unlimited golden ages, etc.

As far as I'm aware, he makes his mods public domain and free to incorperate into any modpack

Awesome. I'd love to do the city lists for you, but I've currently got exams for most of November. Would I be able to get them to you sometime in December?

Awesome, I'll get to that when I can. Question, are the Federations going to be referred to as, eg. The Federation of Brussels, or will they use a denonym, eg. The Belgian Federation. The reason I ask is in the case of the latter I would be able to use other city names from within the country, whereas if it's the Federation of X I would need to use smaller cities or suburbs.

I was only planning on doing "Federation of X", but I suppose if we're going to have pre-defined city names we can also do pre-defined federation names, and fall back to Federation of X for DLC/mod city-states and the ones created from civil war.

For example, we might want to do "Republic of Venice" or "Venetian Republic".

But that's not to say that city names wouldn't make sense of wouldn't fit with the Federation of X pattern - I don't necessarily see any real issue with, for example, Brisbane being part of the Federation of Sydney.

More progress with the DLL tonight. Made it so a Great Person unit can only do their active effect once.

Did the first Lua and XML UI updates for the mod.

Great People unhappiness hits are now properly reflected in the itemized lists in the top panel and in the economic overview page.
