What is the Schlachtschwertierer:

Schlachtschwerter is a pretty old German word which literally means 'battle sword' or 'war sword', however, it refer in particular to huge German two-handed sword in Renaissance era, similar to 'Zweihander' we said today(remember, Zweihander is a pretty 'modern' word. So, Schlachtschwertierer means soilders who wield this kind of sword. And here, Schlachtschwertierer refer in particular to the Schlachtschwertierer of Horn.

Years ago when I searching on the internet to find some picture of two handers, I saw this photo suddenly:
die-hornschen-schlachtschwertierer-01.jpg

101_0094.jpg

I was suprised of what I saw: this is a photo generally took at 19th century, the people in the photo are holding 16th century two-handed swords and wearing 19th century bicorne hat! What a strange combination of eras! I'm fascinated by the Schlachtschwertierer and decide to make a unit model for them, and now it is the time.

Later I know more about them, they're a group of soilders(?) in Horn-Bad Meinberg, Lippe, firstly appeared in 1485 and even exist today. Here are some referance(and many pictures!) about the Schlachtschwertierer:

http://lippe-owl.de/die-hornschen-schlachtschwertierer/

However, they're all in German and I can't fully understand them since I'm just a beginner of German. Would be grateful if someone can translate (part of) them.

Fancy!!

Okay, this is based on a google-translation, which I tried to put into a sensible order. Should hopefully not be too much of a rough read (there are some explanations of German terms at the end, mainly based on Wikipedia entries):

The Schlachtschwertierer are a traditional club within the Schützengesellschaft Horn. Its foundation goes back to an event that, as the legend goes, took place around 1485. Today they form a so-called Rott in Horn's Schützengesellschaft, made of around 16 swordsman, one hammerbearer (as a reminder of the hammer that was used to smash the prison door open) and a count. They wear dark, Tricorn-like shaped felt hats, garments of coarse linen, chainmail and boot covers. Most impressive are their about two meters long swords in the form of a Bidenhänder. The group is accompanied by a captain, a Rottmeister, a Fähnrich, and four drummers.

According to legend, around 1485 the Duke William of Brunswick and Count Bernhard of Lippe were involved in a feud, during which the Count of Lippe got captured at Schwalenberg. The Duke had him put in captivity in the strong castle Calenberg and demanded a ransom of 200,000 guilders, an unaffordable sum at that time. The citizens of Horn decided to raid the castle to liberate their count. Under the leadership of the knights Carl von Blomberg and Hans von Hammerstein, the well armed young men from Horn moved towards castle Calenberg. They managed to invade the castle. The smith struck the iron door of the prison open and thus Count Bernhard was freed. They returned in triumph to Horn. As loot they took the bell of the castle, swords, armor and chainmails. Count Bernhard was delighted by the courageous act of the faithful Horn's citizens and promised them to reside in their city for the rest of his life. He permitted the inhabitants of Horn many freedoms. For example, the Horner are since allowed to pick up and use any wood from the count's forests that was fallen in storms. The wood privilege, the bell of the town hall tower and the two-handed swords and mail shirts are today owned by Horn's Schützengesellschaft and are allegedly from the time of the liberation of Count Bernhard.

As early as 1868 the veracity of this legend was questioned by the editor of the Lippische Regesten, who conducted extensive investigations. It turned out that the huge two-handed swords could not have been produced before 1550. Also there are no historically evidence about any captivity of a count of Lippe in castle Calenberg.

Schützengesellschaft - A Schützenverein (literally "marksmen club") is in German language countries a voluntary association featuring sport-shooting either on Olympic levels or historic weapons.

Rott - A sub-division of a battalion, normally between 6 and 12 men strong (a bit bigger in this case).

Bidenhänder - Zweihänder / "two hander"

Rottmeister - Leader of a Rott

Fähnrich - Today meaning: officer candidate, but here most probably the equivalent of a Cornet, who carries the troop standard (cornet)

Regest(en) - A collection of historical documents from the medieval age onwards

Oh! I haven't wonder that there would be someone translate it so quickly. Thank you so much! This text would be used as the Civlopedia.

No problem. I was born in a town neighbouring Horn, so I felt committed to help. ;)

Also, I never heard of these guys before, although I am rather interested in history. But I was never into the stuff Schützengesellschaften do, which might explain that.

These are really awesome, it'd be cool if you could find some way to "team colour" it. Then someone could use it for a new unit mod or something.

That is pretty easy, I will releases the model with both team-colour and none-team-colour texture version.

P.S. The none-team-colour version will be use in my German Empire civ, too.
