With All the Complaints, is it worth buying?

I think people have misinterpretted the negative comments made about Civ4. I wrote on Thursday after Civ4 was released that I loved the game, but it would be impossible to detail all the great things about the game, so I'd harp on the few problems with the game -- but such criticism was done out of love for the undeniable Game of the Year.

When I post threats like "Useless Advisors" it isn't to bash Civ4 (for the most part), it's to point out one of the game's few shortcomings in the hope that the Devs will see it and make the appropriate changes to improve the game.

So to answer this thread's question: "With All the Complaints, is it worth buying?"

Absolutely, YES!

Just be aware that Civ4 isn't perfect, but no game is.

The game runs fine on my computer, but if you have any doubt I would advise waiting for the first patch. That will resolve most of the issues. It probably wont be too long, anyway - Id say a week.

Just about everyone complaining either has come around or will come around. It's funny when you see a negative thread that's still going strong but the person who started it is in the Strategy & Tips section talking about how great it is. YMMV but I'm having a lot of fun. That's what a game should do, IMHO.

and, Soryn, if some of the stories I am hearing about advisors is true, then I think you might be right ;)! Fact is, though, that military advisors in Civ3 left a lot to be desired. I can never forget the military advisor telling me how much more powerful CivX was than me, even though CivX had 200 swordsmen and I had 150 tanks :p :mischief:!! You see my point.
Hopefully, the advisors will be one of the first 'non-bug' related issues to get patched. Either way, though, I am getting this game the moment it hits the shelves over here :)!

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

I bought the game, and I wish I would have saved my money. Buyers remorse and all. This bug filled game is not worth the plastic in is printed on.

I find that hard to believe. In fact, no way. I've had my complaints, yet I also went to the "mod" section to fix what I thought needed fixin. But to imply that people are complaining in the general forum, and then going and praise the game in the Strat forum is, well, just plain ********. So,, umm,,:mischief: shut up.

I'll cite an example for you tomorrow if you want. Too tired to pick through the forum tonight.
And the "mod" is part of the game. You tweaked it to your taste. That's a feature of the game, not correcting a mistake.

*edit* I didn't mean someone was still trashing the game in one forum and praising it in another. I mean someone started a negative thread and came around but the thread continues by other players. Sorry if it didn't come out right.

Yep. Buy it.

Buy it after you read in here, that the patch is out and actually fixes all the issues it has

Buy it. You will likely have no major issues (remember that those who it works for aren't posting about how it doesn't work) and having a good time.

From a user with a horrible Civ IV experience thus far, my response is:

Borrow it.

If it works on your system, THEN buy it. Not before.

Later!

I had problems for awhile and I'm still glad I bought it. I think it's a great game. And, as Warpstorm states, you will likely have no major issues. Personally, why wait for a patch if the game could very well work for you. Would be shameful for you to keep Catherine and Isabella waiting. [pimp]

What Raggamuffin said.

Definitely has that "one more turn" aspect fine tuned.

Definitely a worthwhile buy. As for bugs, I've only had one issue since I've gotten it-the game crashed inexplicably. Given that it was the only time it happened, I'm suspecting something on the computer, rather than the game. Unfortunately, I won't be home to test it until next weekend :(

Now, is it worth $50? That's up to you. If you've got an extra $50 lying around, and nothing major you need to do with it, then sure, spend it. If you don't have an extra $50, then wait until the price comes down.

There is a risk of encountering technical issues. Some people have.

Small gameplay issues exist, but none of them are gamebreakers, and most are usually not noticeable unless someone points them out.

Hard call, really. Up to you.

The small issues you are talking about are ctd, total system lock ups and unable to read the black tiled maps. These are ummmm small.

Wait for a patch. unless you want to play on low video settings small maps and 8 civs. Then it runs fine. If you run a larger map with low settings there is still a mem leak that kicks in as you explore more and more of the map. From other posts this seems to be caused by the AI and pathing. Seems to be you need at least 2 gb of mem to be able to play through. I would wait for the patch. My thoughts, nothing more. Good luck in your purchase whenever you buy.

Well the good news is I bought it. The bad news is I had a crappy video card. Bought a new one and now it works. Later in the game after about 1500 I can only play for about 10-15 turns before it goes dawg slow. A quick restart of the game alleviates that issue. That's usually a good time to grab another beer and plan my next move. Good game despite some lingering issues, nothing a patch couldn't clear up. And certainly nothing that makes the game unplayable.

Thanks for all the feedback.
