I once read that if you complete a wonder, and that wonder has the same traits as your civilization, there is a chance of entering a Golden Age. I had this happen to me once when I played the English and built the Great Lighthouse, and another time when I played the Sumerians and I built the Theory of Evolution. Both were, however, quite expected.
I was not expecting this last Golden Age. I was the Ottomans, Monarch, Huge map. My Feudal empire was a massive 50 odd cities, stretching from sea to shining sea. I had long awaited the arrival of the legendary Sipahi - the idea had been, from the beginning of the game, to build only horse units, upgrade them to Sipahi, and use my Golden Age to fuel the conquest.
Earlier in the game I had gotten a pair of wonders due to an insane run of luck - two SGLs in three techs. I used them to grab Sun Tzu's and Leonardo's. But it wasn't those wonders that prematurely set my Golden Age off. No, it was my third, the Sistine Chapel.
I once read that if you complete a wonder, and that wonder has the same traits as your civilization, there is a chance of entering a Golden Age. This is why it shocked me when the Sistine Chapel, a wholly Religious wonder, would start a Golden Age for the Ottomans, a Scientific and Industrious war machine.
Needless to say, the nature of my Golden Age had to be changed, from making a giant 50 city Sipahi pump to a late Medieval Infrastructure rush. But I was, and still am, puzzled - why would the Sistine Chapel do something like that? Does anyone have an explanation for this?
