Actually, I would be more suprised if you didn't lose like that pretty often.
The spearman has a base defense of two, is probably fortified, may be on a hill and may have city walls. So the spearman probably has a defense of around 4. A legionary only has an attack of 3, a horseman an attack of two.
If both of them are regular units, the legionary will only win 36.8% of the time and the horsement will only win 21% of the time. With probabilities like that, it's pretty easy to have streaks where you would lose LOTS of units.
