whats the worst sea disaster youve had when transprtig units? ive lost half my archers trying to cross 3 tiles of sea in galleys. 7 galleys tried to cross it, none succeded. i had to ostpone war until middle ages.
my worst, in numbers, of units lost waswhen i had 5 transprts full of Ma's, Mi's and artilliary. my battleship gotatacked, but the transprts carid on unpretected, right ino the enemy base. only i transprt survived the turn to make it to land, and got killed shortly afterwards.

i had 16 knights in 4 galleons that were sunk by a single man-of-war

The moral of the story being - don't risk your troop transports. I would never try to invade another island if there wasn't a safe crossing. Losing 7 galleys  that's an enormous investment !

4 troop transports full of modern armor (thats 36 total units including the boats) all sunk from enemy nuclear subs that I obviously could not see.

This isn't transporting troops, but it falls into the same catagory.

I lost perhaps thirteen galleys and two caravels from trying to suicide across and make contact with other civs in this month's gotm17. I got really furious - and caravels helped little. There was too much ocean.

I've also lost four slave workers once on a transport. Stupid me - why the hell did I ever think a transport could win against a Man-O-War? I also lost a battleship to a submarine, but that was expected.

I remember some large intense naval/air battles I had with powerful AI nations. I once lost everything, 2 destroyers an aegis cruiser and carrier with 2 fully loaded transports which had tanks, infantry and artillery. It was a massive battle in a narrow channel and the AI attacked with alot of planes and ships. Also I have had times when I lost a loaded carrier to AI sub attacks.

Farting Bob, GREAT symbol by the title (the skull and crossbones--quite clever).

My great disastors? Uh, well when I had modded cruise missiles to have hidden nationality I got pouned when crossing an AI's border.

Another time when testing my cool mod, I had done a poor job fixing up the naval aspect, thus submarines were super powerful. So I kept trying to ferry ships around but they kepting getting sunk. I ended getting loads of tactical nukes and hitting anemy subs constantly.

Disaster? By my estimation that'd be losing a galley and a settler in the dark, stormy oceans of the ancient era. If it happens twice, the 'load game' option begins to look quite tempting...

In the modern era, I simply don't let myself into a situation where my fleet becomes vulnerable. This is because I'm fairly ground-war oriented, and because my navy is usually small and defensive.

When I have 100+ units loaded on 10-15 transports (yes, I AM quite patient and calculating in my plans...) I'm not going to war UNTIL they've been unloaded. So my naval casualties are usually light, maybe a couple of empty transports.

My worst moment was when I lost three battleships in a turn to the Babylonians and Chinese, out of my six-ship western fleet. A rare moment of stupidity, but I was virtually begging for it against their massive navies...

In some competitive game, I lost about ten to fifteen galleys just off my island (talk about your suicide galleys). After a while, I was able to get a few out there and discover some new lands to populate. Unfortunately, every galley I sent with troops and settlers sank when they stopped on the ocean. I guess they just weighed too much. Only the unladen boats survived.

Sea disasters... erm, the only one that came to mind is a huge naval battle with India. They had loads of Ironclads (20-30), and I had 8-15 Battleships. Everytime I engaged an Ironclad with one of my Battleships, it was sunk! 'WHAT!', thought I. Ended up losing a lot of Battleships, trying to destroy their bloody navy. Had to resort to using artillery, bombers and cruise missiles, to weaken their sodding ships, so that my Destroyers and Battleships could sink 'em!

You're aware that battleships have bombardment capability as well, aren't you (although it doesn't seem like that). It is a much better tactic to bombard with one or two battleships to get the ironcloand down a few hp before attacking with another battleship. You don't get to take out as many ironclads the first turn, but you will do so without much loss (if any). Also, make sure that your battleships end their turn in the same location as a few otehr battleships. That way you ensure that any attacking ironclad will suffer defenive bombardment, and that if one of your battleships gets red-lined, then one of the other will take over the defense if attacked by a second ironclad.

Now that it's closed, a contender for the worst naval (but not transporting) disaster by zagnut in GOTM17. I can't remember how many suicide galleys I sent out, but I stopped after losing a few, even with the Great Lighthouse.

Never had any sea disasters. And its not because I am a great player. I only play on regent/monarch.

Never happens because I dont build sea units at all unless I want to conquer another continent ;)

I would love to just have a major naval confrontation. Civ3 definitely needs a wider range of naval vessels. Maybe it is because of the mod I use, DyP, that the AI builds small navies. Although, my worst naval disaster did come about in the mod when the AI began attacking and dropping off ground forces using battleships at an isolated colony. I must not have set the flags correctly as the AI used battleships for transports and found my single battleship, destroyer, and ship-of-the-line confronted with a dozen AI battleships.

Poor is the country with no heroes and worse yet, is the country that forgets its heroes. Remember the 51st Highlanders!!!

I'd like to have a naval battle sort of like the battle of the Jutland in 1916. With numerous battleships duking it out on the highseas. I must of waited at least 5 games before i was able to have a Battleship vs. Battleship. I remember having a game where i gave an A.I. all the resorses and techs needed to give them the B-Wagons.

My navy is usualy massive what with being a great admirer of my countries past in the area, but I once lost a fleet of 4 battleships, 2 carriers and 4 destroyers against 1 Battleship, 2 Destroyers

I find the AI often doesn't have a navy. Like right now, I have 13 battleships, 8 destroyers, 9 carriers and a few left over ironclads, and Greece has a galley and an ironclad, useless!

The biggest ai navy I've ever come across mostly consisted of Destroyers with the odd Battleship. It was probably bigger than my Battleship navy, but it didn't matter too much, as I wasn't using transports. I was airlifting my troops over. :)

@Borealis and hbdragon

I think GOTM17 was brutal on pretty much all the players, concerning the sea-disasters...
After all cracker modified the map to have a huge amount of ocean tiles.... I also lost about a dozen galleys, though I did get contact with 4 other civs...:D
