Worst Starting locating thread

It looks like that resource is on the same tile as a volcano? Is that normally allowed to happen?

^ Modded game... ;)

I know it's modded, just look at the odd resources.
But even a modded game must follow some basic rules, I think.

Also, since I don't have volcanoes myself, I don't know if a volcano normally can contain a resource.

i once started on a small island (big enough for about 4-6 cities), mostly tundra/mountains, no horses or iron, but there was another landmass nearby.

still i killed it

I had one once where I was on a peninsula composed entirely of plains, with one Hill blocking it from the main land area, and beyond that hill was half a dozen tiles or so of pure mountains and jungles. On the other side of the mountains and jungles were the Babylonians with nice, plentiful grassland. Unfortunately it was multiplayer, so I can't get a screenshot.

But, even though it was pretty much the worst starting location I've ever got, I played it, and was able to hold my own against the AI's (Babylon, Zulu, and Arabia) with a bit of help from the other human player against Babylon. Never did become prosperous, though.

Its easy to make a volcano contain a resource and a modded game breaks the normal rules imo....

I had a bad start recently and it made me think of this thread.

There are definitely worse starts than this, but it's probably the worst I've ever personally gotten. All the land tiles in Carthage's radius were desert except for a mountain and a volcano. However, with two fresh water tiles and a fish resource I can a little bit of food, but no production. I could get two half-decent cities from that fertile peninsula in the southeast. Most distressing for me was the large jungle to the north. All the good land beyond it is already controlled by Rome or will be by the time I could get a Settler up there. Also that volcano could wipe me out at a moment's notice.

This may have been doable if I was an Agricultural civ. Then that desert would have been usable. But as it was, I wasn't brave enough to see how far I could go with that start.

The volcano is too far from Carthage to destroy it.

Wow- that sure is odd looking. If I see it right, the 21-square city radius looks like this: (l=land tile, w=water tile, c=Carthage)
Code:
                                            lwl
                                           llwll
                                           wwcww
                                           wwwww
                                            www

A Harbor could get it enough food. You'd have 4 food on the fish tile, and 2 from every other water tile. Add some irrigation to the desert and you can work all 4 tiles. Add railroads in the IA and you can also get the mountain and volcano. In the end, you should have a size 20 city that would make 12 spt, probably more without a factory. So yeah, it sucks. At least until Miniaturization, when you get the Offshore platforms that make water tiles give a shield, and then it would make 26 spt without a factory, and still suck.

I've seen the "two-tile lake separated from the sea with one land tile"-structure before...

That indeed is a bad start location, and you shouldn't be playing it unless you want a nice challenge.

I thought volcano eruptions could travel at least two tiles?

You can talk about harbors and offshore platforms and rails all you want. I just don't think I would survive that far.

Actually I kinda wish I'd kept that save just see how badly things would have gone. Morbid curiousity, I suppose.

They can? I really think they can only travel one tile. In fact, I am pretty sure they can only hit adjacent tiles.

Besides, if you really thought the volcano was going to destroy your city, why didn't you just move one tile :hmm:

Yes, and wait for it to erupt and make you win by the volcano conquest bug...

i swear this is NOT modded, i only Generated a new map on the editor, and i looked for a good place to make me start, and i looked over all the starting locations, and i found this

BadStartingLocation.jpg

PS-i not sure if this would be considered a bump, but if it is, i am sorry in advanced... figured it would be better than starting a new thread

I had a start where I started on floodplains. Not so bad right? But I had few shields so I pop rushed a settler, the very next turn disease hit and I couldnt get off the settler. Then disease hit again. Twas a multiplayer game, that set me back time wise so far I had half the points of the others with no chance to win really. (especially since someone else had a awesome cow wheat wheat on grass start and had twice the points of the others)

Why does it say "any start"?

I once started on a mid sized island (enough space for around 10 cities) wich was half desert half plains, flat and nothing else than a fish resource and a single wood tile.
Oh i had a look at the editor on that island and the only resource on it was uranium.

Why does it say "any start"?

because if you save that map, it means that any civilization can randomly start there... only if i assign it a nation will it be a specific starting location... as for now, since no one is assigned it, it could be anyone, one of the AI, or me

I sense debug mode...

But, two different small islands?

I sense debug mode...
If it was debug mode, the whole world would be without the fog. :)
But, two different small islands?
Yeah, usually Pangaea maps have one or two islands out there, and in huge, with so many civs, and there being so much land, the islands end up being the starting spot for some civs.

Oh, I thought it was just the Unexplored black thing.

Well, it is SOME cheat mode, because there is no black unexplored squares anywhere, and it is obviously still early in the game, yet he's researching Synthetic Fibers. Plus, he tried to hide the date and the gpt.
