I use to think that being 5 techs behind with exactly half the number of cities of the AI was scary at emperor which I beat twice. Now I am playing deity and I found myself 8 or 9 techs behind each AI and they had 8 to 14 times the number of cities I had by around 875 BC. I know it sounds unreal but thats how bad it got and it can be blamed on THIS crappy start:

Besides this I find it hard to expand fast and building two curraghs as first build priorities doesn't help the way it use to on emperor. I played this through and eventually the Inca landed a conscript warrior next to one of my empty cities and demanded 24 gold. I gave it to him and then he declared and took the city (cheap bastard). I might play as the sumerians now rather than the Vikings. Please convince me to stay as Vikings  .

Your commands are correct, but you cannot insert it from your hard disk. Your hard disk is not online. You must upload it to a host, then put the url in the IMG command.

You can try http://www.imageshack.us/ or http://www.photobucket.com

You can also upload it to you user account here on this site. Click the paper clip symbol in the text editor to attach it.

You can attach it from your hard drive. Look for the 'Manage Attachments' button in the 'Additional Options' section. You don't need image tags with this method.

well, for the vikings, I would make a curragh and then a settler.

Deity is *tough*, though - they get an extra city right away.

I assume you are playing on an arch map, if you are the vikings? I dont' know that I would use the vikings if I weren't.

Couple of things:

As Vikings, you start with Alphabet, which gives you a good shot at the republic slingshot if you are on an arch map - or, you can research philo and hope to trade for CoL, which will get you republic and good trading opportunities. Other ways to keep up in tech is the GLib or by going no research and buying techs. Well, that won't help you keep up, necessarily, but it might help you not get too far behind.

Thanx guys. Deity is tough. I've heard of people beating deity without GL so I tried to do it by building 2 curraghs first thing. I'll try to post the picture up but it goes something like this:

only 2 grassland non-bonus tiles, the rest is tundra
no luxuries
no resources
no trees
1 deer only reachable after 3550 BC when the culture expansion occurs
1 fish only reachable after that same point

Owtch.....

It still doesn't beat the one I linked to. :p

My worst start was on a small continent, all by myself. You'd think that would be a good thing. My immediate(sp?) surroundings were: 7 tiles of jungle. 1 tile of volcano. I send out my worker to explore. After going through 3 tiles of jungle and mountains I find: a barbarian encampment. Those mother-****ers killed my worker! That's okay, I think, I can make another one.

Then the volcano erupted.
