...provides a defensive bonus (for the controlling player) where it stands like a river does?

I think the Great Wall should be built in each grid, in sections. Keep extending it along your border like the real one.

The Great Wall is fine as is, IMO. Having what is suggested might be more realistic, but it wouldn't do all that much for gameplay. It would be hard to use, and would only encourage early REXing (which, IIRC, is something that the developers want to limit).

I've had lots of thoughts about the Great Wall already (in other threads) and would like to see a change to the wonders mechanic anyway. The Great Wall is powerful enough as is, even if you don't have barbarians on, the boost to espionage provides a game changing advantage.

If I am correct the Wall was never meant for defense as such but to stop the riders from entering the region who had afterwards big trouble leave with loads of stolen stuff (becouse they couldnt carry it over)

The wonders in CIV have more a symbolic impact than a architetural one (see almost every other wonder). The way they put it in CIV IV is great in my opinion.

I think that if your going to add anything to the Great Wall, it should be something like costing a movement point to get across, but that wouldn't change very much, since most units only get one movement anyway. Maybe they would be stuck at your border for a turn before they could get across.

I don't really think it is needed, although I would not really care if it was added.

If anything, since its supposed to be vs. Riders, should probably add +2 to movement cost. Although if Keshik ignore movement cost, that would be Ironic. Maybe have it somehow not connected to terrain, so Keshik can't ignore it? Although I guess the mongols did take over china for a time but still, its just a few tiles. defensive bonus may be appropriate, or even a bonus to cavalry units.

Why not get rid of the idea of a single great wall and make it so its an improvement that needs to have a unit on every other tile of wall. Make it create ZOCs over the in between tiles. Then if you decided to abandon it, be it for lack of use or just outdated tech you could either destroy it or leave it as a quasi landmark.

Or once you build the wonder it makes a few tiles of great wall, and you can build new great walls via build improvement.

the great wall has a funny shape. it cuts around corners stupidly, and, why not just build through the corners..? As some kind of bonus that will piss off the neighbors a little?

I agree that the Great Wall is overpowered. As well as the barbarian blocking the great spy points are awesome for early tech nicking.
Actually went back to the original Civ 4 on another PC and the AI kicked my **** through me not being able to build it

It wouldn't do much good since Natives are only a real problem in America, and it would never be built in America.

RFC has several minor "independent" civilizations, "natives", and "barbarians"--they all fill a similar role, but are officially different groups.

I swapped the great general emergence from the Great Wall to Chichen Itza, and gave the city defense bonus to the GW. Hey, it's at least a step towards what the OP is going for, right?

But if you just swap the Great Wall and the Chichen Itza, you are left with the same problem of an overpowered wonder, albeit merely reversed from an earlier wonder to a later one.
