wretched textures...

hi, I'm new to these forums. i bought CIV 4 1 or 2 weeks ago, and absolutely love it.
i had problems with my PC though and had to format it eventually. now, before i formatted it, the game worked fine, no probs at all.
after i setup my PC anew though, the menus were buggered, i couldn't even start the game, and the video at the beginning didn't show up. only a blue screen.

now i installed the patch, and it works now. but the textures are pretty nasty in places. however, if i zoom in, they fade.

and some of the characters in the diplomacy screen are ugly too. (the only other person taht looks like this is Catherine, so far)

now, of course it's a problem with the graphic card. but i didn't have all this before i reset my PC. would it help if XP had the latest service packs?

any help would be welcome, cheers.

When you reinstalled did you install the V1.09 Patch ?

Could you post Dxdiag dump if using that patch still have problems

(Start button - click -choose run - type dxdiag - press enter - let it chunter away for a min - select "save all information" - then post here using the 'advance' button below.

It would be helpful if you could give other known symptoms (slow game play - slow turns - large save files - long save time - etc - anything unsual - does it tend to happen early/late/or middle game - what size maps play small/standard/large/huge etc) .

Regards
Zy

thanks for the reply. interestingly i didn't have ANY trouble with CIV at all before i formatted my PC, and it wasn't patched.

NOW i had to patch it to be able to play it in the first place....

so far i haven't witnessed any other problems. i continued a save game i had, from before i formatted the HD. and it's just the same, only with some ugly tiling of the map.

the map's on huge, the way i always like to play civ. ;)
it can't really be the graphics drivers that are causing this, i'm sure i updated them to the same level as they were before i formatted...

here's my dxdiag; (had to cut off the bottom because i had too many figures)

Nice setup - shouldnt have any problems with that ..... in the end :)

Its probably time for you to bite the bullett and install SP2 etc, software writers assume that as a baseline and it can make a difference, some features/fixes will not work without SP2. Not the be all and end all, but you should go to latest, particularly SP2.

You like Huge games - rings a tinkle warning bell. Do you get slow game turns, slow saves (mins not seconds) in late games, stuttering movies, increased CTDs late games etc etc - anything out of the ordinary.

From what you said, early games appear OK, given the texture problem (at what stage does that appear?) correct me if I wrong.

Just double check you did load the same drivers you had when it was working before, and that you set pagefile min=max

It might be the memory bug, but I am not certain at present, and dont want to rip the installation apart yet (!) as you have been working ok, until we dig a little further

the problem isn't lag. the problem is really only the nasty textures that have suddenly appeared. i would assume that they are present right from the start of the game, since i continued a savegame from when it looked fine.

the only lag i experience is when i zoom out to see the global view. so far.
otherwise it runs as smooth as a lubed.... oh wait, wrong forum... sorry.:D

j/k

interestingly, the horrid textures fade as i zoom in. so it's only a specific layer of tiling that seems to be effected. comparable to the fact that only specific people (2 so far) are effected in the diplomacy window.

as for SP2, i assume that is the service pack 2? i installed it today. those pics i took are post-installation. IIRC

maybe i should check if any other games' graphics are buggered up. CIV4 is the only one i tried since i formatted the hardrive.

It could still be the memory bug, but I am less certain now as you are not getting any lag, However, keep an eye on the Harkonnen thread (its in the Civ Utilities Forum - cant miss it 90,000+ hits), there has been discussion on textures.

Give NEON a PM, if he does not pick up from here - he may well have a suggestion or two on this from a hardware/system angle
