"Wrong" CD-Rom problem continues

You're right - Mostly this hasn't been an issue with PC games - they haven't bothered.

There is localisation of games, and prevention of people using non local disks in computer games. Look at any of the consoles.

I'm wondering out loud if they've used this as part of the copy protection mechanism and this is the problem with the UK DVD version. All movie DVD's do have a region code and it would be pretty easy to make any DVD such as a game similar.

I'd really like to know if this is the situation - as I said I suspect - happy to be wrong.:D
 
No, it isn't the situation, Yes, you're wrong. Localisation isn't the same thing as region protection!

The problem is with the Safe Disc 4.60.000 protection on the European DVDs.

Most problems with the 'Please insert the correct CD(sic)-ROM...' message should go away if you use that Safe Disc 4 hider program.

AFAIK, the American CDs use Securom 7 for the protection on at least one of the CDs, but that's an entirely different matter.

EDIT: No, according to the Daemon Tools website, the American CDs use Safedisc too.
 
Tried it from your earlier post (just retried). Unfortunately NADA. Any other suggestions welcome...
 
Despite what chuckle said I still tried the region change out of desperation! It made no difference at all - still the same problem. Doesn't look like there is any point using the hider program either if it didn't work for ^

Oh dear. Well, I have the UK DVD here, and I also get the 'Please insert the correct CD(sic)-ROM...' message, but that's because I DO have Alcohol 120% installed!

After using sd4hide however, the game then loads and runs fine!

Furiey, the minimum requirements are for Win 2000/XP though. I don't know if that's relevant or not. I would have expected sd4hide to at least get you to the stage where some other error message pops up.

foofaspoon, why not try it before condemning it?

Wonder if anyone else has any other ideas?

You did click 'Hide' I assume and not just run it?
 
Several people have got the game running well on Windows 98 (pounder) and ME, and if I get issues there, well I'll just have to cope with that, but I don't even get to the game. Sd4hide will not run so I can't say if it would work or not - it says give an error message to the effect of I either don't have Administrator privelages or I'm trying to run it on Windows 9x which isn't supported by sd4hide.

There is a thread dealing with the can't find the DVD issue in the technical support forum here, same suggestions as in this thread.
 
Chuckle I hadn't actually - how embarressing!! However, sadly it makes no difference, I still get the same error message. Hmm, thanks for the suggestion, though....

Incidentaly, I should say that I just borrowed a friends version which we know works fine and I still get the same error on my computer!!! So swapping it isn't going to be a factor :(
 
Hmm, my initial workaround is not working properly.

What I end up doing, is ejecting and inserting the DVD, while starting the game from the desktop icon.

All I can say is keep reinserting the DVD and clicking the the icon on the desktop, and once in a while it starts.:crazyeye:

Haven't figured out a sureproof way of starting it yet.:confused:
 
I occasionaly have the same problem and it goes away if I turn my PC off and then turn it back on and go immediately back to the game.

Highly annoying, but there it is.
 
The annoying No CD-ROM Pops even when i have a DVD :cry: . Try downloading Anti-Blaxx.Install it. then right click and go to settings. In the Protection field put SafeDisk. (if doesnt work try others). In the game, get the autorun.exe path on your CD (DVD). Works fine for me.

It's happened to me several times. It's like my cd rom doesn't refresh and show the proper cd installed. I look and it still says CD 1 or CD2... but after opening the drive, and closing the drive several times it usually refreshes. I wonder if it has anything to do with autoplay features of some drives and/or if there is any copy protection screwing it up. In my case I have a DVD-RW and a couple of burn programs on there. Like I said, it eventually refreshes and finds the disk. But it certainly is a pain.
 
I had this problem with my laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron with a DVD+R/W drive and I had recently applied a hacked firmware to allow it to burn DVD-R/W discs. While this worked great, unfortunately CIV4's copy protection wasn't able to verify the CD. I rolled back the firmware to an official version and the problem went away.
 
I had a simular problem with my laptop, I was getting the error "Please eject and re-insert the cdrom"..

I unistalled NERO and rebooted and the game loaded right up. Putting copyright protection on a disc that wont let you play it if there is burning software on your computer is quite low. Not that it would stop anyone from pirating it, Just annoys the real paying customers.

The funny thing is that I have like 3 different burning suites on my computer as I find different ones are good for different things... but I eventually got the game to install. It's just one of those things publishers try to do to prevent theft when in reality it's the guys printing 1000's of copies that are the menace. In any case, good luck to all those having install wrong disc issues. Try uninstalling your burn software lik A_Nacht recommends and see if that helps.

I have a DVD-RW drive H: *and* CD/DVD combo drive G:. Because I initially install Civ4 from H:, whenever I tried to play Civ4 via G:, the error pops up. But the game loads ok when I put the DVD back to H: and run the game.

So if you have multiple drives, you may wanna try switching the drives.

ps: I did a registry search, there's actually a reference inside indicating from which drive Civ4 was installed. Hope this can help some? :)

Yeah, many games do that... they only look for the disc in the drive it was originally installed in. Kinda stupid but it's the way the games install and then bascically hard code themselves to that drive. I know there is a way to change it but I don't remember.
 
On my two PCs and a friends PC autorun programs don't always activete the correct program. When installing, two of the systems activated Catalyst installers and the third was something else. (It didn't have Catalyst). This has happened for me on other installs before this. I thought it was just something wrong somewere in my systems. I have a lot of system protection and upkeep software running. On one of the three systems I had to create the desktop short cut manually after the autorun wouldn't accept either disk and the desktop shortcut didn't exist.
