In your head...
So it seems in every game I play there is at some point a global conflict which decides the dominant nations for the future.

This time around it was at the advent of gunpowder.

Me (Rome), China (which was odd considering the fact we had been at war twice before), The Celts (A small but militarily mighty empire), and America.

Against England, Portugal, Russia, and Egypt.

Each bloc had minor empires as back up.

Has anyone else experienced a World War in a Civ 3 game before?

Practically every time I play

Every time someone declares on me.

I'm not sure a dogpile counts as a world war. :D

It is a little annoying that for enough gold, techs, resources or luxuries ANY AI Civ will declare war for/against another nation. You can have a gracious AI declare war on you after 1000's of years of alliances. Likewise, for two fur coats, an old tech and a nickle, the AI you have been beating on for the last 500 years is suddenly on your ally.

It's a lot of fun when a world war breaks out. I can't say it is the standard for me - where there are 'teams' against 'teams', but it certainly happens. Dogpiles are more usual. Even better is when a bunch of Civs are at war with each other and NOT allies, though this balance rarely lasts long. Its even better when you get to sit it out and soak up the benefits.

I find that if you get to a position where you control a continent or a large expanse of land. The AI has no option but to try and compete. If they cant attack you because you are too powerful they will attack each other, until the most powerful is able to compete against you. Foolish AIs.

for some reason I almost always get into dogpiles but rarely anything that resembles a world war with any remote balance of powers

Of course world wars happen, especially in multi-civ world and it's all tied to tech eras.
key techs are:
Printing press- All civilizations can communicate so world diplomatic network is set up.
Navigation/Magnetism- Universal unblockable trade enabled as trading through ocean is unblockable and this is so in every map setting including pangea. In addition map trading enables full utilization of land routes as all territory is revealed.
Nationalism- Enables complex diplomacy including all possible options.

In addition by this time, ocean vessels lead to full colonisation of all land squares so the only option for growth is war. As Asimov said: every crime have three components:
Motivation, Tools and Opportunity and all are available now (Navigation-motivation, Printing press- Tools and Nationalism-opportunity).
