WWII scenario as French

I tried to win the WWII scenario as the French (on deity, of course)... but it seems that just as I start to get powerful, the Axis decides that they don't care how much tribute I give, they want to kill me. For example, I was in control of all of Spain, Turkey, and France (I even re-took Paris), and was at peace with all except the Russians, when the Axis demanded 1000 gold in tribute, and even when I gave it to them they attacked the next turn. Needless to say, they kicked my $*%.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good strategy to use as the French?

Well, look at it from a historical standpoint, the french's main point in that was it to uhh die!

What about the FFF?

ASM to answer your question
So here's what I do.

From the first moment I build a transport and many freights that will cross the Atlantic and give me lots of money.

Taking Spain and Turkey is a good thing and it's quite easy.

What I never do is cause trouble to the axis. If they declare war to me you it's better to give away a city than keep on fighting. More than two turns of war with them will make me loose. But while I am at war I take all their advances in one turn with spies.
Then make peace and let them take a city. With all the advances I can build a modern army and later attack...the Allies.
With a good army and spies that destroy fortifications, I'm able to get Alexandria and all the other Alied cities of the eastern mediterranean.
The allies can't harm you I you take Alexandria quickly which also lets you sell your granaries
From then on you can do a lot of hings.
Once I even succeded in taking Tobruk, Paris and Rome in one turn and sell all my Cathedrals.

But the real thing to remember is that you must never be at war with a superpower for more than 2 turns otherwise you're lost. When you go to war you must alway be SURE of taking a city and then make peace again.

What do you say?

Once you're starting to claw back the territory towards Germany, I'd be tempted to pack the Maginot Line with defensive units and spies to bribe any attacking troops with the pots of cash from the American trade. When the Germans send armies, they may be able to defeat one of the defensive units in the fort, but your spies can buy any others and you will have a large army on the Nazi doorstep.

No. It's impossible to deffend yourself agaisnt the germans in deity mode. You must first build an empire yourself.

I was working on the basis that you had already built an empire. I wasn't suggesting that you go out and blitzkrieg the Germans straightaway unless you were after an honourable samurai death. This is just a way to irritate the Germans while you also conduct attacks on other fronts: through the Balkans, etc.

I played this scenario ALONG time ago...I´d be much better now I hope!

I found I could hold Marseilles no matter what...and as for fighting I directed most of my efforts vs the Italians. The problem with most the french cities is their poor defensive terrain...plus the fact german airpower can become chronic!

A key tool I´d advise is trading with freight...PLUS getting those fighters build and eventually SAMS...otherwise you will fail...the armour thrust can be fought off easily, but with so little production the air campaign (which is so much better directed) requires proritisation of air defense.

Attacking the Turks and Spanish is a little cruel IMHO...good work to retake paris THAT IS TOUGH!

That is a good idea... New York is huge.. I'll definitely do that

I don't cause trouble with them, they cause trouble with me. It seems that whenever they don't want to be at war with Russia, they attack me.

With all the advances I can build a modern army and later attack...the Allies.
Well, in the game I was playing, the Axis allied with the allies. You can't piss off one without incurring the wrath of the other.

Another thing that worries me is that the French don't start out with espionage... how am I supposed to use spies to steal technology when I can't make them without stealing espionage? Diplomats are much less effective..

Aren't the Axis and Allies set as vendetta? Shouldn't it be impossible for them to ally? I've never seen that happen...
But I CAN'T BELIEVE the Axis doesn't start off with a fundamentalist government, that's ridiculous. They don't even have it discovered! I'm playing through as Axis now, and have yet to discover fundamentalism. (about to tho) Geez!

As far as playing the French...you could always follow the historical example and let the axis take the northern half of France and then do everything they tell you, except give all your money and techs to the allies so the axis can't extort your money...of course, that's an excellent way to be killed.

Interesting thing I just tried... makes it a lot easier.

In the first turn, after Axis took Paris (it ALWAYS happens) I accepted their offer for a cease-fire. This made it so that they didn't attack my partisans, and they only protected Paris with one armor. Well, when it was my turn, I took one of my armors that was in a fortress, broke the cease-fire, and took out the tank protecting Paris. I then proceeded to occupy the city with one of the partisans. I got 300 gold! I then talked with the Axis, and they offered cease-fire and peace, so I accepted, and then I offered an alliance. They accepted on the terms that I give them 250 gold (I had just gotten 300 from Paris
wink.gif
) and that I dissolve my alliance with the Allies. (would've happened anyway)

Well, from the alliance I received rocketry after a while, and the big plus is that the axis didn't feel the need to attack me. They did dissolve the alliance after a while, but they weren't that hostile afterwards... now, the Allies, on the other hand, were, but they were easily pacified with a gift of rocketry.

The game is going well now.

[DOUBLE POST]
been a while since I've had one of these on any forum.. sorry

The Allies have it don't they?

Well if you manage to steal it from them before talking to them it's perfect!
That because as soon as you open negociation with the allies they cancel your alliance (unless you re-declare war to the axis).

So after you steal the tech from them all they do is cancel an alliance that would have be cancelled anyway sooner or later.
But even if you don't get Esp. on the first try you can try two more times without having them declare war.

French can "win" the WWII...
Yesterday I played it on Deity and French finished having 26 Objectives
while Axis had 0 (zero). Some advises:
1) make cease fire with Axis at turn 1 after they have captured Paris.
2) set science rate at 0 and sell all your universities, libraries, port
facilities, granaries as soon as possible.
3) at turn 2 recapture Paris and make a cease fire treaty again. Try to
make a peace treaty, it is possible.
4) don't allow your gold grow more than 500 gold, otherwise Axis will
attack you. The less gold you have the better is attitude of Axis to you

5) build 1 Armor in every city as soon as possible. Later you should put
4-5 armors in Paris - Axis will sneak attack you eventually.
6) build 3 freights in every city and send them to Cologne. I made a
mistake in my game and sent them to New York via ocean transport but it
was a too long operation without much benefits.
7) build some Engineers, add roads (not railroads) at every city square,
build aqueducts/sewer systems and celebrate We love the President days
after setting luxuries to 30-40%. Now you can accumulate 3-4 thousands
gold because Axis respect you.
8) build Highways in some cities (Paris is great for that - it had about
80 trade arrows from trade routes)
9) Build 6-8 diplomats for whole empire, 2-3 defenders in every city
10) Wait till Axis build Manhattan Project. while your trade is huge -
you must get about 800 gold pure income every turn.
When Axis have built Manhattan Project your diplomats must get Rocketry
- Axis have a good railroad system so you can steal technologies from
many cities. Actually I was in doubt - I didn't want to attack Axis
because their attitude was Cordial despite they were at peace with
everyone except Neutrals. Still the goal of the scenario was to fight
Axis so my diplomats interfered. They got the Rocketry and I immediately
rush-built 3 Nuclear Missiles and 3 Paratroopers. Nuclear missile costs
625 gold if you don't have any shields in the box, and even cheaper if
you had some. Next turn my Paris was nuked by Axis (usual AI behavior,
isn't it?). I launched 2 missiles at Berlin and Frankfurt, captured the
2 cities, bought 3-4 nuclear missiles and 2-3 paratroopers again. So the
party has begun. During next 15 turns (till the very end of scenario)
Axis and French nuked each other every turn, but since French nuked 2-3
cities while Axis nuked just 1, Axis eventually ran out of gold and towns. During
last 3 turns I nuked and captured 12 towns - Axis had only about 200
gold so they could do nothing - Laser hadn't been discovered so no SDI
was possible.
So main advises are "build freights to get gold to build nukes and
paratroopers"

PS. I attached 2 last turn saves for those who are interested

I forgot to add that you can sell almost any city improvement during several last turns in order to get the money for the bombs.

sandman you have some nice tips there!

I really liked the Cologne thing which I had never thought about!

I made some tests and it seemed Cologne was the best city for trade - it had many rivers and most city hexes had roads inside. Under Democracy long-term trade is much better than instant bonus, especially when most cities have Markets and Banks.
But the strategy has a rather big disadvantage also - when you finally capture Cologne the trade bonus in most your towns instantly gets down to very low numbers. So I tried to do it as late as possible.
