WTH?

Once I get to the modern era, I get up to 1 crash to desktop per turn. I have an X800 XT ATI graphics card. I built this comp myself and it is fully loaded with some of the very best equipment money can buy.

I can run FPS like FEAR and Halflife 2 with the graphics settings turned up as high as the go without having even 1 glitch. Now I try to play Civ 4 which isnt even that graphically intense and it crashes constantly.

I get an error message that goes on to say that I ran out of video memory.

I tried turning all graphical effects off and turning everything else to low. It didnt change crap. I still crash with a message saying I ran out of video memory.

And before you ask, I have tried Civ before and after the latest patch. Neither worked well.

Currently, I basically needed to press the "Save" button every 3-5 minutes so when the game crashes I dont lose much progress.

I am a sad boy at this point because I really REALLY enjoy Civ 4, but this problem needs to be fixes NOW. Who releases games like this anyways?

How much memory has got your X800? A friend of mine has got the same problem with a X700 laptop card and 128MB Ram. I'm also having this prob since 3 days. Mine: Ati R 9700 M 64MB Ram. I'm kinda confused, this problem just occured when I played maps which I created or edited with the MapView editor. I'm also having these crashes on small maps and also in ancient or medieval ages. Dunno why..

My X800 has 256 memory. I also have it in a normal computer, not a laptop. Anyways, just had to vent at this horrible company. It boogles the mind that any executive would let a game get out that isnt close to finished. This memory leak is massive.

The most sad part is the fact that it has been many month's since release and they still havent fixed it. Hell, they have barely addressed this as a problem.

PLEASE pull your collective head's out of your ass now.

Thanks

Changing the agp aperture size in the BIOS made a big difference for me (as well as updating to the latest ATI drivers for my 256 MB AIW 9600, v6.2 i believe). I had seen others comment about the aperture size, but i never checked (being that i'm a little slow and i ASSUMED that it was ok because i can play other games without any issues). Once i bumped it up from 64MB to 128MB... it seems to be running fine. I started up a huge map with 15 other civs on marathon (graphics on the lowest setting) and it still seems good even after the entire world has been exposed. My next test is going to be to update the graphics level to medium.

Thanks to all those who tried to help me out!

Did you test with the old drivers and higher aperture size and the new drivers and lower aperture size? I think new drivers made the difference with 256MB of video RAM on the card at least up to large maps.

The recommendation to increase the size to 128 or 256MB applies to cards with less than 256MB memory. However, it usually doesn't hurt to increase it, even if it doesn't improve performance.

Works fine for me with an X800Xt. How much RAM do you have, and what size is the page file? 1gig RAM and (I think) the same for page file does the trick nicely for me.

How about instead of US having to do thework to get the game to function... They simply FIX it?

A NOVEL idea I realize... But other companies seem to make it work...

Not of any real help to your issues but I suspect the release of the game in its current state is over a lawsuit TakeTwo is going through from GTA:SA.

This was actually the executive's decision me thinks. Get it out, get sales rolling, cut losses. Someone posted the stock chart of TakeTwo a lil while back in Gen. Discussions Forum. It's pretty low if that helps the pain any.

There is alot of us out here suffering from minor to major problems.

EDIT: Here is the only thing I have seen that MAY help you guys out.

Harkonnen's Memory Fix (Not compatible with 1.52 still AFAIK)
