XMLSpy question - foreign characters

So I set about editing some XML files with Xmlspy. However, when I open files that contain non-Roman characters (like things with umlauts), Xmlspy can't seem to read the characters. Instead, it renders placeholders which often break the tags. Do I need to download some extra character sets or something?
