Gotta wait until I'm 21 years old (July 1st).

I live in the state of Florida; therefore, I don't need a license nor any safety classes to purchase the gun. I only need a conceal permit. Best part is, there is a gun range not too far from my home where the police answer questions regarding gun laws and give pointers out.

Also, Florida has the shoot first/castle doctrine in effect. Now, if some moron foolishly attempts to break into my house again...he'll regret it in a hospital bed.

Oh yeah, the local gun shop has some in stock. They're selling at about $1,600.

This really does exemplify the difference in my country to the US. When I read the op I thought and?

 no offence though, you now have a weapon with which to not only maim people but tear chunks off them. Enjoy. :p

I've never seen a gun let alone fired one or seen one fired or seen a GSW, despite working in a hospital for 5 years. And I'm pretty glad about that. :mischief:

That might explain the context of the first paragraph. :)

You do need a safety class, it just isn't legally required for a Florida CCW permit. Attend one. It might save you twenty years in prison, and someone else's life.

Meh, the neighborhood I live in is turning to crap as we speak. Emergence in gangs and such; hell, in the past month, there has been four home invasions in my street. FOUR.

The police helicopter flying at night is a regular occurrence on the weekends. The only thing that stopped the burgler was the alarm system; it took the police 15 minutes to arrive. In 15 minutes the SOB could have robbed my house, killed me and my parents.

I was going to opt for a shotgun but like I said, it's a dangerous town. I want a firearm on me at all times.

Oh God yeah I'm not disputing your right to bear arms, especially when yours is probably average firepower per capita. I'm just saying that, from my perspective buying a high calibre handgun seems a little blah. :) Massive difference in weapon culture, our weapon of choice is the fist usually, more rarely the knife and extremely rarely outside of big cities such as Manchester and London a gun.

Over here 59% of police officers voted against having guns on duty of those 10% said they would leave the force if they had to bear arms. It's a whole 'nother ball game.

Some statistics though to put it into context: gun related murder Washington DC. Pop 5.3 million metro: 2007: 500 deaths. Hampshire Population ~12 million mostly in large cities such as Portsmouth and Southampton: 2007: 5 deaths due to firearms.

1) You need a permit to purchase the weapon, granted after a background check and resulting in the registration of weapons of a barrel lngth of less than 18 inches. If you are a felon, you will fail the background check and be denied.

(I don't know if this goes for gun shows, as opposed to a fixed store.)

2) You must take a class (including weapons safety) to get a concealed permit (barring experience that excuses you from the class). I think it is only like 8 hours.

3) ?

4) Profit.

A desert eagle (presumably .44mag or .50cal) is a silly weapon. It fills no need niche and is basically the hummer of handguns. Why would you choose this handgun? The Ruger SP101 with glasers is a far better home defense weapon and a 1911 is way better for range shooting and general purpose. I also recommend a Sig or a Glock. A .50 handgun is just goofy. You might as well just put a sock in your pants.

Handguns

* Permit to purchase handgun? No
* Registration of handguns? No
* Licensing of owners of handguns? No
* Permit to carry handguns? Yes

Purchase and Possession: No state permit is required to possess or purchase a rifle, shotgun or handgun.

It is unlawful for:

* any convicted felon to have in his or her possession any firearm or to carry a concealed weapon unless his civil rights have been restored.

* the following persons to own, possess or use any firearm - drug addicts, alcoholics, mental incompetents, and vagrants.

* for persons to have in their care, custody, possession, or control any firearm or ammunition if the person has been issued a final injunction that is currently in force and effect, restraining that person from committing acts of domestic violence.

* to sell, give, barter, lend or transfer a firearm or other weapon other than an ordinary pocketknife to a minor less than the age of 18 without his parent’s permission, or to any person of unsound mind.

* any dealer to sell or transfer any firearm, pistol, Springfield rifle or other repeating rifle to a minor.

* a minor less than 18 years of age to possess a firearm, other than an unloaded firearm at his home, unless engaged in lawful activities.

To purchase a handgun, without later attaining the conceal permit, you do not need a permit. Background check is common knowledge. Granted, I'm speaking about the state of Florida; all states has varying gun laws.

I'm not getting into this argument. Please don't jack this thread with this old beat flame war in the making.

what? he was obviously suggesting you better get some hand grenades, a rocket launcher and maybe an atomic bomb if you really want to feel safe.

but maybe you could as well just get a really huge and expensive pe... car.

Don't forget anthrax, agent orange, white phosphorous, a year supply of preserved food/water and a high quality "safe room".

isnt it "panic room"?
anyway, i further suggest to have an army of super-soldiers at hand. you never know if your nuclear arsenal really is sufficient...

Why buy a cannon like that for self-defense? If I were you, I'd think about buying a gun that doesn't shoot through walls and kills your innocent neighbor while aiming for that pesky burglar...

A Desert Eagle isn't a good first gun. Expensive gun, expensive ammo, can't carry it concealed(if you get the permit), bad for home defense since the bullets will easily travel through walls and into the neighbor's house, etc. For the price you can get a good shotgun for home defense, a good 9mm or .357/.38 pistol, and have enough left over for plenty of ammo at the range.

Hmm, i'd recommend a move, not an escalation.

Yeah I don't think a Desert Eagle is a really good choice as far as self-defense goes. A smaller pistol certainly would be my choice.
