ZWK TOT version.

The conversion and graphics look awesome. I hope you guys don't mind if I also post these files at the SL Site?
Don't care, but I'll only be maintaining files on the CFC database, WRT updates and bug fixes. The graphics modpack is a compilation by me; anyone can make one of those. It's not endorsed by Kobayashi. [Edit: You went ahead anyway. So why'd you bother asking? :p

BTW, you've named Fairline and Curt as co-creators of the modpack on the SL site. I compiled it without their participation. However, on the CFC database I decided to list the 3 main content contributors in the author field out of courtesy.]
Now we need a Dainichi Sekai Taisen ToT conversion!!!
Off you go then. :p

Just a courtesy thing to let you know what I was up to. I guessed you would be OK with it and if for some reason you objected I would have just removed them from the SL Site :)

I will amend the text. It makes more sense to credit the person who made the mod than trying to list every artist involved too!

RE: Dainichi Sekai Taisen ToT conversion
I would love to make it but I currently have a hundred and one things to do :crazyeye:

Right, I have a full ToT conversion of DST on my hard disk. I've got a million other things I should be doing, but what the hell. Since the original author is still around, I've got a question for Kobayashi before I upload it. There are some high quality, 24-bit colour ToT unit icons available, especially for the US aircraft (see attached). Do you want me to include these? Or should I just upload the original graphics and let others make their own customisations? Anything else?

Oh and you really should proof-read your text before you release your scenarios. They're chock full of spelling mistakes. I cleaned out a load of them simply by running a spell-checker over the text files.

I would say, if you can change all the graphics consistently to 24-bit by all means. However, if its a matter of changing only some of the units, then it would make more sense to leave them all as they are.

If you intend to play it yourself, may I suggest that you play it first before releasing it. No harm waiting a few more weeks.

Other than that, thank you.

The ships and Japanese planes are generally lacking. I only suggested it because you've got a few downgraded ToT icons in the scenario already. As far as the rest of the graphics go, I'd probably leave that for separate modpacks, as everyone has their own preferred style for terrain and cities in particular - and you don't have ToT, so it's not really practical for you to compile your own set. If any quality modpacks come out, I'll link to them on the download page.

I haven't played any Civ2 since October last year when I play-tested WotR, so I wouldn't hold my breath for that. So here it is. Original graphics, with the exception of the unit shields and flags. It should play the same as the original MGE scenario.

BTW, what's going on on tile (58, 98)? It's the Black Hole of New Caledonia. Has it been transformed by an engineer - like this?

While we are on the subject of ToT scenarios, would you mind if I built a page for WotR at the Scenario League Wiki site Catfish? I can either upload the files or provide a link to your site so that players can find the most up to date version.

Also would you mind if I posted some (or all) of the ToT conversions you have posted on this site? I could even post links to the download pages in the CFC database instead of uploading them. I have no sense of rivalry between any of the Civ sites. For me the more people who can enjoy the fine Civ2 scenarios the better, wherever they find them.

I will wait for a reply before doing anything this time ;)

The second option is probably the most practical for the reason you stated, plus it means that there's something unique about my site. It's basically what I've done in the CFC download database. The download link there takes you to the download page on my site. I'm only going to maintain one set of files and remember, it's still a beta, so further changes are a possibility - when I can be arsed. I still haven't play-tested the version I released last year where I reworked the heroes' stats.

That's up to you. I'm not really fussed. Most of those conversions were uploaded to Apolyton years ago (in my 20 MB uploads section - which I can no longer access). The links to the files were hidden away in various forum threads; I had all the links to the relevant posts on the Links page of my website so people could actually find them. Last month I was checking for dead links on the Cave when all of the Apolyton forum links went belly up, as the site was down/busy yet again. I figured it was time to find a more reliable server. The links on my website now all point to CFC.

I like CFC's downloads database; it's simple to upload, easy to make changes and it's integrated with the forum software. I guess the downside is that there's really no filter on the quality of the submissions.

Do you mean you like some kind of quality check or a special part in the download section for the "better" scenarios????

I don't know if it's possible (I don't look much at the download section) but perhaps I (as junior moderator) can create something where better scenarios can be found (after being "judged")?

Thanks Catfish. I will use the Description and screenshots from your page here on the SL Site page and provide a link to the Cave for downloading.

I loved the old scenarios database here at CFC. I spent many hours exploring for hidden gold. The new one is taking shape nicely now thanks to the work of JEELEN and your ToT conversions. The description and screenshots give a better indication of what quality the scenario might be.

I see what you mean about quality of submissions. Some scenarios have clearly taken years to build whilst others have taken a weekend. It would be tricky to sort them without being seen to be elitist. Some people enjoy the basic WWII scenario that came with Civ2 and would be satisfied with the fairly basic scenarios for an afternoons amusement whilst others will be seeking something a bit more in depth. The new database interface gives a much better indication of which scenarios are which.

Some of the scenarios on the database don't have a title picture or screenshot on the left hand side. To me that looks a mess. Just thought I would give some feedback to whoever is running that section :)

The comment about quality in my last post was more an observation than a major gripe.

No, the system has been implemented to allow all members to contribute. Variable quality is a weakness of such a system. If moderators start approving and disapproving all upload submissions, that opens up a whole can of worms. Then again, look at the units section: does an individual 64 x 48 pixel icon really require its own download page? IMO, that's just spam and makes the database difficult to navigate. So perhaps some maintenance is required. There are provisions for rating files and making comments, but they're not very effective when you've got such a small player base as in Civ2.

Adding a special scenario section is more trouble than it's worth. It would die from neglect in no time at all. Leave that for the Scenario League. McMonkey/Werd100 can handle that. ;)

I think some images from the database may have been lost when CFC has hacked by some tw@t a couple of years ago. I've been adding the map as the first image (that displays as a thumbnail on the category page) plus one or more screenshots.
If you want anything added or changed let me know :)
Looks OK to me. Perhaps add the third summary paragraph from the CFC page below the main title image. Hey, I noticed a copy/paste error in that image. I'll fix that.

I've updated the conversions of DST and Cruel Sea. Normally when I convert a scenario I override the default sound map using the @SOUNDS section in rules.txt. It's simple. However, there are a lot of naval units and figher-bombers in those two scenarios and I decided to switch to the default sound set which uses multiple sound files for sea and air units. It requires a few extra WAV files in the download, but the effect is better, eg, separate ground and air attack sounds for fighter-bombers and multiple salvos from warships.
Not to mention all of those other ToT conversions!
Speaking of other conversions, does anyone know anything about the Underdark scenario by Mr Temba? I half converted it; changed all the terrain (see attached), but IIRC, it had some fundamental bugs, I wasn't sure of the author's intention and left it alone. Is it worth converting?

Mr Temba's Underdark is the absolute Best of his era and my inspiration to design scenarios in the early days. He used some really ground breaking ideas like helicopter settlers that can transform sea to land, pollution depicted as slaves etc. see http://www.civfanatics.com/civ2/reviews/underdark.php

What kinda fundamental bug does it have?

I don't remember. I thought it was something to do with buildable units. I looked at it again just now, but I don't see it. The graphics are hideous by today's standards and I don't know if anyone would download a converted version. I'm far too lazy to put together a graphics modpack; there are a ton of unique units. The text files are full of spelling errors, which always reflects poorly on a scenario: it's generally a good barometer for the level of care taken in other parts of the scenario. I find that in mods for other games as well. I finished the conversion; I set the Fantasy game flag so I could use the soundset from that game (clearly the author was taking the piss in that department) and had to make a few adjustments to technologies and city styles as a result.

Well, here are some Underdark monsters for ToT that were recently (re)posted on apolyton. Perhaps this would make a decent start?
