So... you would or would not recommend Lovecraft? I also have found multiple classic works boring or unreadable.

Extremely easy to assess whether you like him or not. Listen to this short story(15 minutes) called Dagon. If you like it you it you will probably like Lovecraft. If not, then you probably won't. It's among his first well known works.

Afaik Dagon was also his first published work (not in the magazine he was later on regularly published in).

I do like that story too. A lot of interesting images that set the mood

Another very early story of his i like is The beast in the cave, about someone lost in a labyrinthine cave.
