Macintosh Tech Support/Game FAQ

About 1 1/3 years ago, I bought a mac Tiger 10.4.11, and the first thing I bought for it was obviously Civ III Complete. It installed and worked perfectly for a year or so, then I accidently removed it from the ribbon. Now every attempt I make to restore it to the ribbon or even open the program simply makes it bounce on the ribbon a couple times and then vanish.
I have been trying to fix it now since appx. January, and I'm finally out of ideas. I saw a previous forum post that told me to find the Civ 3 Complete Folder in Home/Library/Application Support, and I don't know if it matters that there is no Civ 3 Coplete folder in there. I have already downloaded the patch at http://files.aspyr.com/support/Civilization3_Mac_1.22RevA_ManualInstall.dmg
to no avail. This is driving me insane!
PLEASE SAVE ME!!!

Did you read my reply to your previous post?

Thanks Alan, I didn't think that my first post actually posted, because I didn't know that there were multiple pages. In my second post (the one before this one) I said that I have already downloaded http://support.aspyr.com/index.php?x...oot=239&id=598 to no avail. To make myself more clear about the "Ribbon" thing, I have replaced the icon on the dock, and when I open it from there, it bounces once and stops. Thanks for your help,

The link you gave in your second post is not the one I am suggesting. The problem you are describing is exactly what is reported for the QuickTime 7.6 update. So I really recommend that you try the solution I proposed.

Oh, ok, thanks.

Alright, when I tried that, it responded the same way, but gave me this error message:
The application Civilization 3 Complete quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.

Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.

Not the same way, then!

Did you click Report? Copy and paste the resulting text into a post here and we can try to advise.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to help me. In responce to your last post, yes, I did report it. Here is the text from the report:

Mac is usually not confusing, but I don't know what the :eek::eek::eek: this means. Thanks for your help!

It crashed when trying to load up your "Hall of Fame".

This data is stored in a file called ~/Documents/Civilization 3 Complete/HighScores.cv3

I suggest you try removing that file - drag it to the desktop - and then see if Civ3 will start up.

PS. You don't actually have to *send* the crash report - I doubt if Apple will do much with it. Once you have copy/pasted the data here you can just close it.

[UPDATE]

I've had another look at your crash report. This indicates that you are running the Civ3 Complete application directly from your Desktop.

/Users/cljohansen/Desktop/Civilization 3 Complete.app/Contents/MacOS/Civilization 3 Complete X
It doesn't seem to be inside the Civ 3 Complete folder. This is probably a recipe for disaster all by itself, as Civ3 Complete needs to know where to look for all its supporting files, and needs them to be in the right folder structure along with itself.

TYSM!!! Ok, you were right about the Hall of Fame thing. I did that and it didn't work, but then I read your second post and realized that when I downloaded your patch, I had put it directly on the desktop instead of in the Civ 3 Complete folder. When I did that like you told me, it worked!

Thank you so much, you are the best!

I've recently started playing Civ III again after a long hiatus (Complete wasn't out yet the last time I played). I have vanilla Civ III for the mac, fully updgraded, with some version of the GOTM mod installed. I'm playing on one of the Intel macs.

After downloading the updated executable from Aspyr to fix the quicktime bug, I have been able to play successfully. I had no problems for a while, but recently I've started having occasional game crashes during the beginning-of-turn sequence. Most turn-changes it's fine, but some seem to crash while processing one of the cities (different ones, no common themes I've been able to tell about what's going on in or around the city). When that happens, if I go back to the previous turns auto save and replay identically and end the turn again, it will always crash again. But if I replay differently it seems to be intermittent -- and if I go back several turns and replay, it doesn't seem to crash. The crashing started happening around the beginning of the industrial era, so I imagine it's complexity-related.

Are there known issues with vanilla on the intel macs? Or something else that might help with my trouble-shooting? Any suggestions would be welcome. My plan for trouble shooting is:

1) Uninstall civ III and re-install a fresh copy, upgrade it to current and get the quicktime fix, then try to run from a saved game that I can reliably fail on to see if it still fails
2) Try playing on an older non-intel mac
3) See if I can find a copy of Civ III Complete even though it's old and try that. (I might do this anyway -- some of the conquests changes look like vast improvements, and it'd be nice if the strategy articles were accurate..)
4) Give up and go back to Civ IV.

Sounds from the first part of your description like you're playing the old Macplay version of vanilla civ - not the Aspyr Civ3 Complete. But I'm confused, because I'm not sure you could even get the game to run if you combined the Aspyr fix with the Macplay disk.

What brand name is on the physical disk of the vanilla you are playing? If Aspyr, it appear on the right hand side just above the 2K logo.

You are pretty lucky to get vanilla Civ3 to run at all on an Intel Mac. I would hazard a guess that you are running Tiger, not Leopard, as Leopard broke it completely, I believe. I certainly can't run it.

I hope you understand that Aspyr had nothing to do with the old vanilla version, that was published by MacSoft, and is not the same software as Civ3 Complete as supplied by Aspyr. The Aspyr patches and download are irrelevant for your vanilla Civ3. The last upgrade that makes any sense for that version is the one linked in my signature - version 1.29b2, and that was "released" (if that an appropriate term for an unsupported beta) in 2003. MacSoft have taken no interest in supporting Civ3 for at least five years.

Civ3 Complete is not nearly so old. It was released in around 2006-7, and is still supported by Aspyr - hence their release of the Quicktime fix for it this year. You can definitely still buy it, and I would recommend doing so.

Thanks for the quick responses.

I am running Tiger (10.4.11) and the old MacSoft game (1.29b2). Oddly, the problem seems to have gone away -- I reproduced the crash a dozen times yesterday morning and the night before, but when I got home from work last night and started trouble-shooting, I finished my turn without problem. I guess I'll count my blessings that it runs at all! :)

With the feedback that it's still supported, I've ordered Civ III Complete. I remember being sad I couldn't get conquests and ptw way back when, so hopefully it'll be worth it.

Sorry for the confusion with the Quicktime bug. On reflection, I think I was superimposing the memory of dealing with that for Civ IV onto Civ III.

As a side note: switching from Civ III -> Civ IV when it first came out was interesting and a little confusing and involved the occasional mis-step as I changed habits to micro-manage less because it was less required. Switching back was even more surreal - but fun.

My Mac Tiger was recently hit by lightning (No, seriously!) and was rendered nonviable:cry:. We took it to three different mac stores before it could be fixed, and then it worked well for another week and a half, when it failed to start up again. It works now, but we decided to back it up. However, I don't know if I backed up my Civ III files. Will they be safe if I backed up the home folder? If so, great; if not, where are the save files located? Thanks.

tysm, we backed that up. great! you rock!

The saves should be in ~home/Documents (at least mine are).

That's true for Civ3 Complete from Aspyr.

If you have the old Civ3 vanilla from MacSoft then they are normally in the /Applications/Civilization III/Saves/ folder. If you installed the application in your Home folder instead of /Applications/ then clearly the whole thing will be in your Home folder backup.
