Question re: Chief Powhatan (Founding Father)

Does the strength bonus given to Converted Natives still apply if you've taken the time to educate them into a different career, or does it apply --ONLY-- to the Converted Native unit itself?

I'm just wondering if it's possible to create stronger soldiers by educating natives and then getting this Founding Father, or if the bonus is lost for that unit once you DO educate him.

I almost never accept Chief Powhatan as a FF so I haven't had the opportunity to try this but I would expect a convert to lose his strength bonus once he was re-trained.
