Welcome, one and all, young and old, but especially our team here at the Realms Beyond Civilization Succession Game Number 2 Subsection B to this thread, the very hearth and home of our first SG experience!
I'll be your host, Jester, and the Malinese the instrument of our limitless ambitions! So, folks, here we have it: the first thirty turns! Without futher ado, let us commence:
(1) 4000 BC: I start the game. We begin in a position thats nice in rivers, but poor in food. However, were next to some grain, and that helps. I found our city, Timbuktu, and the barbarian hut pops, giving us some maps. I set production to a warrior.
Time to weigh our situation: We have wheat, which is good. Were next to marble, which is *very* good. Sugar, gold and pigs are also visible. The gold is right next to some beautiful flood plains. We should consider some dotmaps for putting a nice specialist city up there. Also, were right next to the coast, which should be a high priority for putting down a city or two. Hopefully, well get fish, clams, crabs, n all that nice seafood.
For our first tech, I select mysticism. I doubt well be able to land either Hinduism or Buddhism, but I figure we might as well take a shot at getting Judaism. It is only noble, after all, and Id like to have a religion if we can make it. Agriculture has to wait until we have a worker anyways, so, to invoke Sirian, that which can wait, should wait! (Now watch as he completely disagrees with everything Ive said here.)
Mysticism due in 6 turns.
I move our warrior to the coast. No luck yet.
(2,3,4) 3960, 3920, 3880: Exploring to the northeast
(5) 3840 BC: Stone to the northeast! Marble plus stone = options.
(6) 3800 BC: Fish discovered to the NE. Theres a spot for a city that could get corn, stone and fish. Definitely a preferred site for our dotmapping. Plus, were apparently at the bottom of a peninsula. On the minus side, that means our capital is hogging all the space for potential cities. On the plus side, there are clams down south! Linguine alla Vongole for everyone!
(7) 3760 BC: We meet Peter, to the NE. Hopefully he doesnt steal our stone!
And, as luck would have it, Ive just discovered my first bug. I minimized the window (to add to this report you read right now), and upon my return to the game, the there will be peace in our time option is *under* the interface window! I cant click on it, and that just leaves one option, war. Since were not really interested in war, I start to fiddle. After some experimentation, I find the global view button solves my problem, although it goes back to being bugged after I zoom back in. Well, fodder for the patching process, I guess.
I make peace with Peter. Hopefully he wont hem us in, but expanding in his direction ought to be a priority for us.
Mysticism comes in, and I pick polytheism. Buddhism would be nice, but were almost sure to lose it, and it doesnt lead to Judaism in any case. Polytheism is safer, AFAIK.
(8) 3720 BC: I continue to follow the coast.
(9) 3680 BC: Nothing eventful
(10) 3640 BC: Buddhism is founded in a distant land. Told you so! Well, polytheism probably isnt a good bet then, but theres an outside chance theres only one spiritual player, in which case we might still get it. Time will tell I resume alas alas.
(Warning to self: 10 turns have expired. 30 turns remaining.)
(11) 3600: Timbuktu finishes its warrior. It grew a couple turns ago, and is now also working the sugar, for a nice balance of resources. I decide to build another warrior, and give our city time to grow to size 3. The game recommends a settler, but Im dubious about that.
I send the new warrior up to grab the goodie hut in the northwest, and finish scouting that area.
(12) 3560: Hinduism founded in a distant land. Great, a second opponent with spiritual. Just peachy. Well, we play the hand were dealt , and try to play for Judaism. If not, I just set us back by quite a few tech turns. At least well get masonry out of it.
(13) 3520: Found Peter in the east. We should be able to race him to the stone/corn/fish spot
I hope. This is a priority, for sure.
(14) 3440: Goodie hut gets us experience (5) and finds us some lions! Hooray for lions!
(15) 3400: We kill the lions. Hooray for killing lions! I take both of our units promotions in woodsman, in order to speed up scouting.
(16) 3360: Our warrior, buffed by his amazing woodsman lv.2 ability (+75% in forest!) kills a wolf. Also, we meet Asoka, with whom I make peace. I cant ask her what she thinks of Peter, which I presume means they havent met. Asoka is to the west, which cant bode well for our expansion in that direction. But, well make do. I still think its a priority to grab the stone, but maybe not if it endangers our marble.
Mr. Spock tells me that polytheism is now in the bag. I tell him to set his phaser to Masonry. (Apparently the Vulcan live long and prosper hand sign thingy was taken by Mr. Nimoy from the Jewish tradition. I hope this is an omen!)
(17) 3320: Warrior kills another wolf. Timbuktu builds another warrior, and I switch them to build our first settler. I pass on the chance to get a worker, because wed need agriculture to do anything with him, and we wont have that until after we have Monotheism.
(18) 3280: Our woodsman warrior finds tundra to the north, indicating that were probably near the north end of the world. Not a terrible place to be, since theres room to expand up there.
(19) 3240: Woodsman Warrior finds a Russian warrior in the north, along with a hut to explore.
(20) 3200: Horses spotted in the north. The goodie hut provides us with a fairly worthless map, but it fills in some gaps for us.
(Warning: 10 turns remain!)
(21) 3160: Same old same old.
(22) 3120: Masonry comes in. We should make some enemies, and then theyll teach us to build high walls. (Man, I dont understand this new tips system at all.) 12 turns until were either Jewish, or we aint. If we get it, Ill be praised as a hero!
If we dont, Ill be condemned as incompetent.
Being a ruler sure is tough. Our warrior finds bears in the NE. That doesnt bode well at all
(23) 3080: Our warrior is eaten by a bear. Three strength? I havent seen bears that scary since the beginning of Baldurs Gate 1!
(Yeah, if youve been there, you remember. Bears that could kill your whole party. Ah, to be level one again. But I digress
)
(24) 3040: Nothing eventful.
(25) 3000: Same.
(26) 2960: Woodsman Warrior finds another goodie hut, near Russian territory. Woodsman sure helps a heck of a lot in terms of exploring! This guy just cuts through forests like crazy.
(27) 2920: Looks like Asoka was the one to found Hinduism. How appropriate. She has apparently met Peter by now, and doesnt care one way or the other about him. I get the impression well be permanently in between these two.
(28) 2880: Nothing special.
(29) 2840: Woodsman Warrior find the bears. Hopefully, his bonuses will be enough to carry the day. If not, I just made a really stupid move, and well see how it goes.
(30) 2800: Woodsman Warrior (tm) wins!
(31): 2760: I hit the take turn, but havent done anything. The game will be handed over in this state, although theres nothing to do but wait.
Status Report: Monotheism is due in 3 turns, which means that if were behind, were not far behind. Hopefully, well have Judaism in the bag, and then all celebrate with some delicious deli foods and klezmer music. If not, thems the breaks.
Also due in 3 turns is our Settler. We can send him out with our existing warrior, then build another one in Timbuktu if we need to. Again, a worker is only valuable if you have a tech that lets you do something important with him, and at this stage, something important means food.
Our relations with the Indians and the Russians are totally neutral. We should get a scout (warrior or otherwise) out to the west to figure out how worried we have to be about Asoka. That may revise our priorities, but for now, the northeast is where we need to be, to cut Peter off from whats rightfully ours. So, before we move on, a little dotmapping ought to help in figuring out where to put our new settler. Somewhere by the floodplains to the north might be a good plan, but so might grabbing some of the resources to the northwest.
Methos: Youre up! Monumental decisions at hand here, bold new era, and whatnot.
Regoarrarr: On deck. Limber up, because we want this one to be good!
