RK-08: Atomic Betty

Please, don't underestimate Prince 2.08 and don't underestimate archers, folks.
This is something he didn't mention: FB was losing on Noble until he asked for advice on how to win. Then he started winning consistently.

Why did I get Archery?
1. It's Raging Barbs and we don't have bronze.
2. I already gambled on Bronze and it's not there. I don't like to gamble again on horses or iron until it's secure. In Raging Barbs, you can't gamble too much.

Don't worry about the barb axemen. See those forests or hills? Stick archers there and not inside cities. Ok, it is Raging after all, so maybe Pottery quick is a bad idea. Try Agri -> Animal Husbandry -> Wheel -> Pottery instead as the tech research order.

Plunder, or Wonder what am I gonna do?
Oracle is buildable here. What tech will we shoot for? I'd like Code of Laws with Metal Casting as the backup plan.
Artemis is also a good idea. It provides the most GPP, however polluted it is.
Parthenon is a bad idea since the extra GPP from that isn't probably worth the effort.
Great Library is definitely a good idea. If that's the only wonder we'll be building, this is it.

We are just taking risks by not having Archery. I know someone is complaining about getting Archery; it is a conservative play and might save the day if horses or metals aren't there. Don't take the risk, it's better to be on the safe side (no reloading, people!)--and we probably won't have Iron Working until Alphabet.

If we're resource poor, we should make our way to Construction and stage an archer+catapult attack on an enemy. Or get Feudalism via Oracle and have longbows+catapults. Make the best of the situation.

That is a plan yes, but it may not be necessary. Our nearest neighbor, Alex, is quite far, and we may have space to expand before we need to hit anyone.

Hi guys!

Yeah, I know... It's a shame to get beat on Noble.... But that's why I put my warning on the signature! ;)

So, I was planning to at least give a better look at the save yesterday, but I couldn't. I'm trying to look at the X-map, but yesterday I thought that a Plains Forest was a Forested Hill! So, isn't there any resource near that Cyan area? I'd like to secure our lands via cultural borders...
Our settler is due in 8 turns now. Agriculture is due in 3. Anyone can "guess" how long would it take to learn AH? I'd rather put an Archer on the queue to delay the settler (and give it a better escort) and see if we have horses and settle there. If we don't, I'll settle yellow.
Talking about Techs, we have a Tech trader around: Freddy. Why don't we just go for: Agri - AH - Writing - (Wheel?) - Alpha and get the other techs we need (AKA:pottery) via trading? I know it's a bit of gamble and we may not be able to get any wonder besides GL (going for Lit right after Maths), but it would give us a boost! I'd beeline Construction if we had Jumbos, but unfortunately we don't...
After seeing allllllllll that calculations on the SGOTM threads, I kinda got addicted to it! ;)
I'll play in about 10 hours from now. So, please, raise a flag if I'm (not) wondering too much!

Btw, I THINK I got the autolog working last night. These forums are amazing!

fbelintani, don't discount your contributions because, as you say, you are only a Noble Newbie. I was just moving up to Monarch level when Warlords 2.08 came out and I find I'm back to struggling to win at Prince level. We're all sorta newbies now.

I think your plan on tech trading is smart. I hope we don't end up having to resort to an Archer-Catapult rush but it may be our only option. Great idea!

Get Yellow down now. No need to wait for a better escort.

Also, we have a good radius view, but we need an archer to fog bust up north. That said, I think its a big risk, and not worth the gamble to try trading now. Why? A Civ will not trade UNLESS it has met two OTHER civs. And really, Alex does not need help. He's crazy as is.

Here's the deal. We can only get attacked by barbs if there is space, blank, unseeable space for them to spawn. We can send out three fog busters and thats a problem gone. Barbs attacked the nearest Civ, and down south, that's Alex. So, no need to turtle up so heavily.

After Agri, lets move to Masonry, hook up our marble, and do a COL slighshot, giving us a shrine a bit down the road.

EDIT: Also, before we get excited over using Horses, lets do remember Greece's UU.

My main concern on delaying the settler was about seeing horses. I'm not thinking of Alex as a target now. Nor I'm seeing him as a trading partner. I was hoping to use Freddy. By the time we have alpha, they will have met each other and probably have Iron Working to trade.
Don't you guys think we need horses? I'd change the Tech path then. For CoL, the fastest way is to get Priesthood and Writing.
Well, I think I'll let this to some other player. Probably My 20 turns will expire too soon. After Agri, I will go The Wheel - Pottery. If our goal turns to be the Oracle, we will need it to get Writing. If not, we're Financial and will have something for workers to do besides roading and farming.

Military, do you think Barracks is necessary now? After the settler, We may be able to whip it for 2 pop, using the overflow to complete an entire archer, won't we?

I know I got too long, but the clock isn't ticking fast enough here at work. ;)

With Barracks...naw, let it grow. You see, my main idea was that with all those food resources we can push out another two settlers in no time.

Turns played!
Summary:
:science: Agriculture and Wheel in
:strength: We have two archers and a Warrior fogbusting. An archer is in London and another is due soon in York.
:culture: London border pops and we seal off our stone from others.

Turn 30 (2800 BC)
Really nothing to do. <ENTER>

Turn 31 (2760 BC)
London grows: 3
London finishes: Warrior
And resumes Settler Due in 4

Turn 32 (2720 BC)
Warrior defeats (1.80/2): Barbarian Wolf
Send Warrior to Yellow site

Turn 33 (2680 BC)
Research begun: The Wheel

Turn 34 (2640 BC)
Warrior defeats (0.88/2): Barbarian Lion
Warrior defeats (1.22/2): Barbarian Lion
One of them was near the yellow site

Turn 35 (2600 BC)
London finishes: Settler
Send Settler to meet his escort! ;)

Turn 36 (2560 BC)
London begins: Archer

Turn 38 (2480 BC)
York founded

York begins: Archer
Start an Archer in York to let it grow. Will need culture there soon.
After healing, send Warrior on York North to help archer fogbusting. York has no MP!
Its impressive to see that Freddy and Alex sent scouts up there.

Turn 39 (2440 BC)
Warrior defeats (1.68/2): Barbarian Lion

Turn 40 (2400 BC)
Woody (Warrior) promoted: Woodsman II
Warrior kills another lion! Promote him to Woodsman II and name him Woody!
London finishes: Archer

Turn 41 (2360 BC)
Research begun: Animal Husbandry
I said I'd research pottery. But with cows and pigs to Pasture, I thought 2 more turns wouldn't hurt. We can always trade for Pottery.
London begins: Archer
Another archer in London. MM to get it when city grows.

Turn 42 (2320 BC)
Warrior defeats (1.42/2): Barbarian Lion
Found Ragnar! He is at our Southwest. Way too south, btw.

Turn 43 (2280 BC)
London grows: 4
London finishes: Archer
Send him South to Forest Hill

Turn 44 (2240 BC)
London begins: Archer

Turn 45 (2200 BC)
York grows: 2
I spotted Ragnar Settler, Archer pack and a Warrior right behind them. Heading NE

Turn 46 (2160 BC)
London finishes: Archer

Turn 47 (2120 BC)
London begins: Worker
I started to road London to York with our Worker. I timed him to be on top of Gold when it will become available.
Warrior defeats (0.84/2): Barbarian Lion

Turn 49 (2040 BC)
London's borders expand
London border's pops and Worker on Gold Hill starts mining it. It already has 1 turn of road building done.
Warrior defeats (0.40/2): Barbarian Warrior
Wow! Our Woody kills the first Barb Warrior when healing.

Turn 50 (2000 BC)
Our research is at 80% (2:gold: of city maintenance).
Animal Husbandry due in 1. Worker in London due in 2. I thought it'd be good for us to estabilish a trade route between London and York. When mine is done, next player will be able to slide research up again.

So, it's our land:

And a little to the south:

I know it's kinda irrelevant, but I liked this:

And the save!

Good work! In one turn we should find out the location of horses and figure out where we should put the third city.

Roster:
1. Robo Kai
2. fbelintani
3. Woobi (up now for 20)
4. frankcor (up soon for 20)
5. vra379971

Can we please start farming those resources?

*notes complaints from our people that their poor fibre diet isn't helping our present situation*

Man, I just farmed every resource we can right now (rice and wheat).
Next turn we get Animal Husbandry and will be able to pasture the cows and pigs! And on the turn after that, we'll get another Worker from London. Although, I still think gold is more urgent.

Oh :p The trouble with this format is I couldn't make it out with the screenshots lol. Nice job then.

Sorry about the screenies. It was my first report ever. I promise to do better next time. :)

lurker's comment: mostly spam, but this is the best read since one of Bede's games (that's a compliment for those of you not familiar with the venerable monk).

Oracle is buildable here. What tech will we shoot for? I'd like Code of Laws with Metal Casting as the backup plan.
Artemis is also a good idea. It provides the most GPP, however polluted it is.

I think you have a shot at the first and last. the middle 2 :p

BTW, the screenie and dotmaps have been fun!

Thanks Admiral, but I must make one thing clear: they are not Dotmaps, they are X-maps!

Come to think of it, the Oracle needs three more techs to be researched, but we need Polytheism for Literature anyway, so it may not hurt to go Myst-Poly-Priesthood after either AH or Writing.

Woobi hasn't picked up the game and it's more than 24 hours past the previous game. Frankcor, you are up!

If we follow FB's screenshot, AH is in 1 turn. I'm at work now, so I can't check how long Writing will take. But if we try for Masonry/Priesthood next and Writing later, we can build/chop the Oracle while Writing is being researched... that is, if we still wish to pursue Oracle. Another idea is to go straight to Polytheism, Masonry and Literature--ignoring Oracle to build our Great Library faster to get tons of scientists.
