UK defence minister says intelligence has evidence of Chinese lethal aid to Russia

British defence minister Grant Shapps accused China on Wednesday of providing or preparing to provide Russia with lethal aid for use by Moscow in its war against Ukraine.

Shapps told a conference in London that U.S. and British defence intelligence had evidence that "lethal aid is now, or will be, flowing from China to Russia and into Ukraine, I think it is a significant development".
Shapps did not provide evidence to support his assertion.

"We should be concerned about that because in the earlier days of this war China would like to present itself as a moderating influence on" Russian President Vladimir Putin, he added.
The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. said last month it had not provided weaponry, adding that it is "not a producer of or party involved in the Ukraine crisis." The Chinese embassy in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

US says Russia likely launched anti-satellite weapon

The US says Russia launched a satellite last week which it believes may be capable of attacking other such probes.
"Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we assess is likely a counter space weapon," said Pentagon spokesman Brig Gen Pat Ryder on Tuesday evening.
It was on the "same orbit" as a US government satellite, he said, adding that Washington would continue to monitor the situation and had to be ready to protect its interests.
Russia has not publicly commented on the issue.
Moscow and Washington - two global rivals - have repeatedly clashed over space weapons issue at the UN in recent weeks, with both sides accusing each other of seeking to militarise space.
Earlier on Tuesday Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed the US was seeking to turn space into an "arena for military confrontation".
A number of military experts have long warned that space is likely to be the next frontier of warfare in an increasingly technology-dependent world.

On Tuesday, Gen Ryder said the Pentagon believed the Russian satellite was "presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit".
"Russia deployed this new counter space weapon into the same orbit as a US government satellite.
"And so assessments further indicate characteristics resembling previously deployed counter space payloads, from 2019 and 2022.
"We have a responsibility to be ready to protect and defend, the domain, the space domain, and ensure continuous and uninterrupted support to the Joint and Combined Force," the Pentagon spokesman added.
Separately, a spokesperson for the US Space Command told Reuters news agency that the satellite was "likely a counter space weapon presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit".
The spokesperson said the satellite - Cosmos 2576 - was launched on 16 May from Russia's Plesetsk cosmodrome, about 800km (497 miles) north of Moscow.
In its statement, Russia's Roskosmos state space agency said the launch on 17 May was "in the interests of the defence ministry of the Russian Federation". It said its launch vehicle Soyuz-2.1b was used.
The different reported launch dates might be explained by the fact that the Moscow time zone is three hours ahead of GMT.
Neither Moscow nor Washington provided any further details.
But space analysts say that Cosmos 2576 appears to be on the same orbit as America's USA 314 satellite.
Since launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has warned that US satellites aiding the Ukrainian military could become legitimate targets.
In February, the White House admitted Russia was developing a "troubling" new space weapon, but insisted that it had yet to deploy it.
It came after a senior Republican congressman issued a cryptic warning about a serious national security threat, sparking intense rumours around the Washington DC.
A report released by the Washington DC-based Center for Strategic and International Studies last year suggested that Russia is developing a range of anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons, including a missile that was successfully tested against a defunct Soviet-era satellite in November 2021.

...against a defunct Soviet-era satellite, right.

Klescheyevka was recaptured today, another toponym remembered after 2023. Russian advance slowed down but did not stop so far.

Russia now allegedly (sourced to a leaked internal Russian government resolution) intends to unilaterally declare a change to the sea borders with Finland and Lithuania.
Putin is pretending he is Xi and that the Baltic is the South China Sea.

Putin is pretending he is Xi and that the Baltic is the South China Sea.
Especially since in practical terms, sorting through the tiny pieces of rock involved, it should turn out as a 50 m of watery space... And that is how Russia will present this – as nothing – if they go ahead with it (the leak might in itself be Russia testing the waters, as it were, and never go beyond that). It's a test-balloon provocation – how might Finland, NATO, etc respond?

The head of the Army of Romania warns that there is a risk of escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and that Romania must prepare

"The Russian Federation has become a problem for world order, for democracy. In fact, it is a war of Russia with the democratic world. It is not a war with Ukraine. Yes, the population of Romania, like the entire population of the European Union, of Europe, must be concerned and we must adopt the appropriate measures to be prepared. I personally, not necessarily as a military person, believe that the Russian Federation will not stop here. If he wins in Ukraine, the main target will be the Republic of Moldova. We will witness tensions in the Western Balkans. I am more than convinced that President Putin's policy will escalate in the immediate future", declared the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad.

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) prosecutor said he received threats while conducting investigations against top Israeli officials with a senior figure telling him the court was "built for Africa and for thugs like Putin," and not for the West and its allies.
In an interview with CNN, Karim Khan said: "I've had some elected leaders speak to me and they were very blunt. 'This court is built for Africa and for thugs like Putin,' was what one senior leader told me."

In civilized Russia, Kadirov is wet dreaming about putting Zelensky in his basement. Many goats and sheeps in Chechnya are going to get jaleous.

Meanwhile in Donetsk, Ukraine, another S-400 battery got barbecued by ATACMS, including radar, command unit and several launchers. It seems Ukrainians are paving the way for F-16.
In the other side of the world US congress and White House are considering lifting the ban allowing Ukraine to use US made weapons in (real) Russian territory. Fair play.

This is the free market. Some countries like Russia or Israel order weapons and other countries like China or the U.S. sell them. This is good for the global economy as a whole and creates jobs and profits which can be reinvested into things like sidewalks, parks, and roads.

I'll take the bait.
This is the free market.
Selling weapons to psychopaths and robbers in your neighborhood would also make free market, but something tells me you'd vehemently oppose it.

Banning supply of weapons to the country who invades its neighbors for landgrab and ethnic purges is a right thing to do. In case of Israel/Palestine where both sides want to purge each other and occupy the land, I think the US support the side that doesn't execute gay people, among other reasons.

Not at all, actually. I’m not a busy body who minds what enterprising businessmen and go-getters in my vicinity are doing. I support their efforts to promote the economy.

Well Ukraine and Russia both outlaw gay marriage. If the US made decisions on the basis of which sides supported gays, none of you people would get weapons.

No, quite obviously the point of my post and the article aren't about "Israel war crimes".

What is it about then ? Without specifics about the "senior figure", it just says that a "western" institution judge equally a Russian war criminal and a Western war criminal and that the US think they are above the laws (which is not news and whataboutism when posted in this thread)

Now is the "senior leader" is European, I think the backfire on his reputation will surely be visible from Vladivostok, but who is "senior" in Europe ?

Russian S-400 air defense getting hit by ATACMS the other day. The video has humorous edit, but this is the only video available at the moment

This highlights many failings of the S-400 system. While it was deployed and operational, it failed to detect the observation drone, and the incoming missiles were detected way too late. We see five missiles being launched, the first less than 30 seconds before the impact, and there is no cut in the video. That means the missiles got as close as 30 km to target before defensive action was taken. This reflects poorly on radar performance, after all short-range ballistic missiles and drones are the most common aerial threats on modern battlefield.

Russia's removal of border markers 'unacceptable' - EU

The European Union has denounced Russia's removal of buoys marking the border with Estonia on the Narva River.

A total of 24 out of 50 buoys placed to mark sailing routes were removed in the early hours of Thursday, Estonian officials said.

Tensions over the border have risen since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said "such actions are unacceptable".

"This border incident is part of a broader pattern of provocative behaviour and hybrid actions by Russia, including on its maritime and land borders in the Baltic Sea region," he said in a statement.

Moscow has taken issue with the placement of the floating markers, used to prevent boats from straying into foreign waters, and disputed the planned locations of about half the 250 buoys, Estonia's border guard service said.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said she was trying to clarify the situation with Russia.

She said it appeared to be part of a "broader pattern" of action by Moscow to use "tools related to the border to create fear and anxiety".

Estonia's foreign ministry said it had summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires and said it was treating the move as a "provocative border incident".

In a statement, it said it had demanded the "immediate return" of the buoys.

It comes after the Russian defence ministry briefly published a proposal to revise its maritime border in the Baltic Sea this week.

The proposal was deleted after creating concern among Nato members, including Estonia.

Moscow is yet to comment.

Exclusive: Putin wants Ukraine ceasefire on current frontlines

MOSCOW/LONDON, May 24 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to halt the war in Ukraine with a negotiated ceasefire that recognises the current battlefield lines, four Russian sources told Reuters, saying he is prepared to fight on if Kyiv and the West do not respond. Three of the sources, familiar with discussions in Putin's entourage, said the veteran Russian leader had expressed frustration to a small group of advisers about what he views as Western-backed attempts to stymie negotiations and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's decision to rule out talks.

"Putin can fight for as long as it takes, but Putin is also ready for a ceasefire – to freeze the war," said another of the four, a senior Russian source who has worked with Putin and has knowledge of top level conversations in the Kremlin.

Most impressive video yet. As previously claimed by Ukrainian sources the whole battery got obliterated. It also comes to show how badly Turkey and India messed it up for watching too much RT and importing such crap. Turkey even damaged its F-16 upgrade aspirations for it.

It is also noteworthy as Russian air defenses, not yet the S-400 battery which is a long range first tier AD system, but the shorter ranged Buck and Strela launchers and such which supposedly should be there protecting the main S-400 battery, failed to detect the observation drone, which was there stationary watching without being disturbed at all for who knows how long.

if you do a little digging, you'll notice that "border guards" in Russia are under the jurisdiction of the FSB.

I imagine part of their job description similarly involves changing where the map lines are drawn so as to pull their neighbors into inadvertently sparking a crossing incident and painting themselves as the victim, in true espionage fashion.
But that's just my suspicion...
