yes, the map generator is AWESOME
a minor gripe I have though, is that "archipelago" maps with a lot of land end up being continents a lot of the time. Archipelagos are awesome.
haha.. this is funny.. happens to me a lot too. I know what you mean by "size 2 city in the middle of a mountain range"
You forgot "completely across the world from my capital!" though ;)
Maybe he uses galleys because he's more concerned with building other things (tech improvements, land units, wonders.. whatever) and he wants to ferry a few units around? I end up doing that a lot.
As for privateers I hardly ever see the AI use them, and I hardly ever use them myself. Maybe...
I know if you raze cities it's a reputation hit and other civs get mad at you (especially the civ whose city you just razed)
But what about if you abandon a city? Is it considered killing your own people, and worthy of a reputation hit? I remember in SMAC if you razed your own cities it was...
You probably aren't trading techs enough, especially at the outset of the game.
Also, on lower difficulties the AI researches slower. I think this is only a big problem on Chieftan level though.
I do it if the city producing the settler has a spearman or warrior to spare, that way my new city already has a defender and I can get right to work on an offensive unit or a city improvement if I want. In the very start of the game though, I don't.
I've never played a game that was totally peaceful. I came close one time, but I ended up having to invade my neighbor for saltpeter.
I've found out that having a lot of cities and a big army can be a deterrent for enemy invasions... but then again, the AI does some very very stupid things...
