Iron Works in a decent City!

I play the same map as Willem - 256x256, might explain why we never get it so often

I suspect so. With a map that large, resources are bound to be more spread out so the it's not as likely you'll get both in the same city. After all, the resource appearances are the same for all map sizes, so the larger the map, the larger area for Iron and Coal to appear.

If your playing on a larger map, you'll get less games in which allows for less opportunaties to build it.

BTW, I discovered that at 256 x 256, with no cities allowed on Desert and Tundra, that the 512 max number of cities is just about right. There's just a few fairly small areas that don't get taken up by cities. I like that because it gives me a definite midgame point.

Willem, you are managing 512 cities? Or is that total.
The largest map I did, I had 266 cities, and it was getting a little more than my brain could hold. Real world, 256x256

Just got it in my Capitol in my current game - production unbelievable - will post a Screen when I get home...

512 is the total number of cities allowed in the game, including the other civs.

And yes, 256 x 256 is a good size for representing the real world. I forget the exact number, but the circumference of the earth is about 25,000 miles, making each tile about 100 miles. All in all, I find it to be a good size to play on. A bit slow in the later game though, at least on my system.

haha.. this is funny.. happens to me a lot too. I know what you mean by "size 2 city in the middle of a mountain range"

You forgot "completely across the world from my capital!" though ;)

Here is Ironworks in Paris... Always wondered how good the chances were of keeping a captured capitol and making something of it. BTW, Joan is now on polite terms with me... first civ to lose a war to me that did not stay furious the rest of the game.... I think I will see if I can get her to gracious. :)

do the world maps now have proper starting locations, like French in france, germans in germany???

I had both iron and coal within the radius of my capital, but one turn before I could hook up the coal or start the IW, my iron source disappeared only to reappear the next turn outside my boundry. I almost cried.

On this mod, Civ3onEarth by Kitten of Chaos, yes.

what size ap is that? ritian looks awfuly small. bad luck for anyone playing as english. 3 cities and then wait for galleys knowing that most of europe would have been colonized very early on.

IIRC 256x256. It is huge. But after all, the European landmass is a small part of the total world. I made a screen shot early on which I named "Crowded Europe" Spain had 2, France 3, Rome 3, Greece 1, Celt 1, Vikings 1,German 4, Russia??? early lead in size. England has to get off the island to do anything. She now has about 20 coastal Greenland cities -- not doing all that well.
I tried the Ottomans once... and quit. Too many mountains in Turkey. It could be done, and I may try it yet.
Turns out the North Coast of Africa (Carthage) is no garden spot either.
This map is pretty accurate over all.

i've had the iron works three times now. my best is in my third city that was a size 24 and was eventually the best city at the end of the game because it produced many sheilds and food because of its postioning.

Once in a capital that I invaded a while back(Rome) there was an Iron Works. The Ai would have gotten to build it in their capital if I hadn't invaded them.

Farting Bob, even in Marla Singers map, with Ireland belonging to the Celts, England will often be one of the best civs, and here's why:

On world maps, Europe often gets insane amounts of bonus resources, thus even though they are much smaller then say, China, they are just as powerful.

edit: pften :p
