I think it deserves at miminum this post to say that the freshest test build has erased my above complaints about OW missing fancy Civ6-style-map-tacks
While I understand your frustration, it might be worth to note that silently Firaxis seemed to have touched the mode with this patch (and using a fix @Infixo developed before plus making other changes)...
Infixo's Real Startegy improves it quite a bit. Not comparable to VP in its extend and effect (sadly, many AI issues of Civ6 are outside the reach of modding), but still worth to be used.
While I agree that Civ6's AI has issues in nearly aspect of playing the game, they differ in their impact on overall AI performance and also in the work amount which would needs to get spend to fix them. To make an example...
Yes, the tactical AI is weak and therefor loses more units when...
The shortcomings, oddities and logic holes in the AIs trading behaviour are legion. I made countless bug reports over time, a few got even adressed - but the system remains pretty broken overall:

I already wrote it a couple of times, but as it repeats with every patch they release...the one(s) responsible for writing the changelog miss the opportunity to collect some extra points: By just making the list more informative. It is one thing to tell verbally and perhaps with facial...
Fixing crashes is always most important...but just in case they should have fixed the crashes on bigger-then-huge maps...it would count double in my book, as that equals expanding gameplay (at least for my preferred playstyle)
