Civilization VII Update 1.2.3 - July 22, 2025

So my first experience with the new patch - I didn't think I was going to be into Continuity mode... And I'm not. I think I like my eras with sharp edges, and a bit of a reset. Very glad it's an optional mode.

Assyria is great. Wish I didn't have to switch out of them...

Just curious: What exactly do you don't like in the Continuity mode?

That's really good to hear, actually, because I really love the core game, hate the EA bugginess, but didn't know I wanted Continuity mode until I played it this morning. So I was a little irritated, thinking 'Ah this is how it should have been from release! If only they'd been able to wait until the game was properly tested!'

But if people also like the original mode, then it's good that both options are in the game, and Continuity mode isn't the no-brainer I thought it was after my game this morning.

One important thing to mention is that current patches are not just finishing the uncomplete game (although this as well), but also reaction to community feedback - something you can't get with internal testing only or even if dedicated external testers like Frankenstein group.

You may have caught it already -- Update 1.2.3 is rolling out now! We mention in the patch notes this is lighter compared to our major June update, but we hope these changes - especially the first round of improvements to Age transitions - feel particularly impactful. We want to hear how these changes feel, so keep letting us know whether it's here on CivFanatics or on our official Discord server. 🙇‍♀️

Here's what's in 1.2.3:
  • New Continuity setting
  • Relationship management improvements
  • End of Age countdown
  • Auto-explore
  • New unique commander Trung Nhi
  • Updates to Advisor warnings
  • and more!
Also releasing with 1.2.3, the first part of Right to Rule DLC, including:
Check out the full update notes here: https://civilization.2k.com/civ-vii/game-update-notes/ (give these a moment to populate!)

Some final notes:

- Some mods might not play nice with the update. If you run into issues, try disabling them first. Steam players can use the legacy branch to wrap up any ongoing games on the previous version.
- Switch/Switch 2 players - this update is coming your way, but at a later time. Thank you for hanging in with us as we get these updates through the additional Switch submission requirements. We appreciate your patience!

Hello, I am very dissatisfied with the studio. I paid 70 euros for an unfinished game! Updates keep coming, but the feature we’re eagerly waiting for still hasn’t been implemented. How much would it cost you to add the option to completely disable victory conditions in multiplayer? How much longer will we have to wait? One year, two years? I don’t understand you. You had a solid foundation with Civ 6, but instead, you chose not to build on it and made a very disappointing Civ 7. Yes, the graphics are beautiful, and the district system is great, but the age transition system is terrible, and there’s a missing modern era. I hope the next update will finally allow us to disable victory conditions so we can fully enjoy the game.

I amazed by the Continuity setting after having experienced my first age transition with it. No more annoying shuffling around of unit positions or commander assignment, investing in an ancient navy much more attractive and more options for doing something relevant with your city production in those last turns  That alone makes this update a good one, even if smaller in scope overall. And yes, ideally we would have gotten it with release, but I'm happy to have it now (and I'm also happy that the fans of the regroup setting still have and can eat their cake either :) )

This is the first time I've ever been actively angry at a patch because there's a very strong argument that the previously broken prior-age yields were a driving force behind the nerf on Future techs and wildcard points.

Background: Late-age buildings are not a very good investment even when working as designed. But prior to this patch the post-age yield was capped at 2 for Exploration and 3 for Modern, making those buildings an outright bad (negative ROI) investment.

"What's the big deal?" you say. "It was a bug and it got fixed."

The big deal is that Firaxis designers use telemetry on player actions to balance the game, and they nerfed Future techs based on actions influenced by the broken yields:
  • Players see that late-age buildings are not worth building due to low yields (i.e., negative ROI)
  • Players are incented instead to spend production on tech and civic projects to get to Future techs/civics as the attribute gains are the only cost-effective (positive ROI) options
  • Firaxis designers see the players being funneled to pursue Future techs and interpret it as player abuse rather than QA incompetence
  • Firaxis designers nerf Future techs because it "overshadows Leaders and Civs" (="Buy DLC!") Future techs now give a point in a random attribute type rather than a wildcard attribute point
  • Players save scum to get the attribute they want because "Nobody puts Ada in a corner!"

Pro tip for Firaxis said:
  • Killing player agency doesn't make players want to buy DLC.
  • Also, stop hiring your QA staff from the Boeing 737-MAX team.

Isn't that already possible? I haven't tried it in MP, but isn't it possible to disable all legacy paths, and when someone "wins" at the end of the Modern era due to turns played, press "One more turn"?

Edit: Hah, just tried it. You are correct. For some reason, it's not possible in MP, only in SP. That's ... strange. I don't see a reason why this is not included already.

@Kenshiro70, let's hope that the new way yields carry over leads to a rebalance of either future tech cost or benefits, as well as golden ages. As it stands now, the science and culture golden ages got nerfed, as the benefit of golden age buildings decreased in comparison to outdated buildings.

My first tries with Gengis were incredibly disappointing. By the time I can build my first chariot and finally have some advantage, I have already lost the game because I am so far behind in every aspect. And the AI seems to be even more aggressive after the patch. They see Gengis and say "well let's wipe him out before he has any cavalry units". And they always declare war together and attack from all sides.

Had the same problem on my first couple of Antiquity runs, which rather bothered me because I hadn't seen that behavior in any game before.

Then realized that, waiting for Chariots with Genghis, I had not built any army early on - only some slingers to garrison settlements and scouts. In the past I had always built at least one 4 x unit army for my early Army Commander to go beat up Hostile IPs.

Apparently the AI 'decided' that I was weak enough to be worth attacking. When I did a third run and built an early army, nobody declared on me until later in the game when we all started forward settling each other.

One example isn't proof, of course, but it indicates to me that the problem may be not so much Genghis as Relatively Weak Target. And given that the third run included neighbors like Militant Ashoka, Imperial Napoleon, Xerxes KoK and Oblique Frederick they didn't stop attacking because they were pacifists!

The problem which I've always had with building an early force, is that it somewhat slows down building up your early infrastructure, so you inevitably will be behind on per-turn Culture and/or Science unless you luck into a nearby Natural Wonder, but combining the bonuses from Isabella and Genghis isn't possible yet . . .

I’ve got to say, Charlie’s game plan of “play the game normally and get stronger cavalry units for free” sounds much more appealing :p

It's not that I don't like it as much as I prefer the alternative. I've never had an issue with era transitions as much as I have had with civ switching. I don't mind the reset, and my first feelings on continuity mode are that I do like things being brought back to a more uniform level. Now if I could only have a new start with the civ I want to play...

Is there any chance that we'll see level ups beyond 50? With the newly added challenges, 52 should be doable. And any chance for steam achievements with the four DLC leaders or the two Napoleons?

Buildings now retain their full base Yields and Maintenance costs on Age Transition. They will still lose adjacencies and special effects
I just realized this should be a nerf to influence yields from obsolete buildings (except villa in exploration age I guess). Nice change if it is true.

Anyone else not getting the new stuff? Mine's updated to 1.2.3, I bought the Deluxe upgrage back in March, yet none of the new leaders or anything have shown up. Feeling a bit ripped off...

EDIT: So after digging through everything, it turns out I paid $55 in March for almost nothing, and now they want another $55? For a game I've already spent $180 on? This is taking the absolute piss.

The new leaders aren‘t part of deluxe, only of founders. If you have deluxe, you need to buy the right to rule pack to get them.

Yeah I managed to work that out after basically making a crazy wall in my head. I'm actually really pissed off because I thought the 'deluxe' edition would include all the post-release content. What kind of 'deluxe' edition doesn't include the DLCs? Absurd. Might be the first time in nearly 20 years I just wait it out. This is deliberately confusing marketing from 2K. Bastards.

Really hope they intend to increase the amount of players in multiplayer and stop spawning 5/3 on the maps. It's always 1 contintent is 5 and 1 is 3, why is it never 4/4?
