  • Not a bad decision. I would like to live in a rural cottage in western Ireland when I retire but my career is in the city, so I have to deal with it.
It's actually a highly New York City thing because of how the ethnic communities there work. It's fairly uncommon for where I live, which is the D.C. metropolitan.
I'm learning German right now, and I throw some of it out sometimes because I'm a gigantic dork. But nope, I'm Ukrainian-American.
I just noticed that I've been nitpicking like all of your posts lately. It's nothing personal, I promise. You're a good poster <3
The gaffes don't usually upset me. Obama said there were 57 states, obviously he knows there are 50 and he made a mistake. Ditto with Palin saying Africa was a country. Neither bothers me, and I'm not a fan of either of them.

However, I think Pelosi's line that I always quote is scary because its not JUST a gaffe, it reveals an ulterior mentality that the government should be involved in every part of your life. If you're willing to pass a law without even realizing what it entails, there is something seriously wrong. So my criticisms of that particular "gaffe" should not be taken as an attempt to insult anyone who makes a gaffe. Its just that I think that particular one was more than just a gaffe:)

Its not just because its unpopular that I wouldn't talk about it. Its because Federal-level politicians SHOULDN'T be talking about it, IMO. Ron Paul doesn't either BTW.
I've considered the possibility of entering politics and I've considered what I would say about gay marriage if I were ever running for senate or something. I've decided I would refuse to give any answer other than "Read your tenth amendment, its a state decision" in that context. I would advocate against amending the constitution either to accomodate or ban the practice.

I'm pretty strongly pro-civil union, the less money the government is taking, the better;)
There's nothing explicitly wrong with that. For me personally, unless sodomy gets recriminalized I have no intention of getting involved in gay issues. Its just not a particularly important issue to me one way or another. On the other side of it, if they ever started forcing churches to marry gays, or starting making "Hate speech" laws restricting speech against homosexuality (This has happened at times even if "Western" countries, and even in Philly) I'd be involved in that debate.

Ultimately gay marriage is going to happen nationwide and I've accepted the fact that it is going to happen, and so I don't really feel like fighting a lost cause that doesn't matter (I might fight a lost cause if I cared about it enough) but I don't feel like its particularly a big deal either.
You are consistent. Truth be told, I don't agree with you often, but at least you're a decent person who doesn't use snark in debates time and time again (I do sometimes due to getting ticked off at getting dogpiled with snark at times:mischief:

I'm not really in favor of it (gay marriage) but my argument is really kind of a "Who cares" at this point. There are a million things I find wrong with society and would love to change. The fact that some places allow gay people to get married is pretty low on my list.

Even still, my religious side hasn't totally separated itself from the debate, and certain people on CFC make it very hard for me to try to separate it.
That sounds really constructive. :p one of the things I hate about the internet is that it makes it difficult for me to spend time on other things, such as reading or playing music. But it's a fair trade. If I didn't have the internet, I wouldn't have such easy access to all those stories, even things you share are interesting. I like old farty things.
:) It's something I remember every once in a while; I love telling and listening to myths, so things like these really charm me. It's especially cool around campfire. How exactly did you grow up with them, you say? I read a few of the myths, but was mostly into cryptozoology back then. :b
