“Qizilbash” means “Red Head” in Turkish and as a name can be applied to any number of radical Shi’ite groups who helped found the Safavid Dynasty (1502-1722). However sometimes it is only used when referring to the Turcoman tribes/clans in the Safavid state who made up the main part of the military during the 15th and 16th centuries.
