1.52: Diplomacy screen crashes

I have this reoccuring problem with civ 4 where the game crashes during diplomacy sessions. At a random point during any diplomacy, my moniter turns off and my only recourse is to turn off and then back on my computer. Sometimes the ATI recovery program pulls it out of the crash and sometimes windows shuts itself down and gives me a "recovered from a serious error" message when I restart. Once the game simply crashed to desktop with a message from windows saying my display driver had stopped responding. This has been going on since I got the game, but it has increased in frequency since the new patch last week. Now I can't get in a game for any length of time without a crash.
I've browsed other topics similar to this on the forums, but none of the responces there help.
I use an ATI Radeon 9600, 1g of ram, plenty of hard drive space, and all the most updated drivers.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem that works?

Hi,

I have the same problem as you. Sometimes it occurs on diplomacy screens, and sometimes during the game...
I cannot play more than 20 min as you!
My monitor turns off too and i have to reboot my computer manually.
I use CPU 3ghz, 1024 Ram, ATi X550 256 MO!
If you found a solution please contact me!

Thanks in advance!

I've been trying to think of a way to solve this problem and I keep coming back to it only happening at the diplomacy screen. Any one of you smarter people aout there know of a way to lower the graphics quality of just the diplomacy screen. Maybe a non-animated leaderhead or something?

I've had a similar problem, but it happens every time I try to open the civics screen.

It's also similar to a persistant grpahics card problem I've had with many 3-D intensive games, but in all other cases, it's a random crash after three or four hours of continuos game play, and thus pretty rare. This is the only time it's been caused by an unavoildable action.

I'm having the same problem, but only when I play multiplayer. I am also using a ATI Radeon 9600 and have 1 gb ram, hehe.

I Havent seen any solutions related to this issue. I dont know if its video card based or what. Is your video card a saphire by any chance?

I thought I'd bump this just in case someone with an answer was out of town or something. :)

Haha, funny enough I am getting it in the Diplomacy Screen; and the Civic Screen if I go there straight from discovering a tech. If I tick no change and then open up the Civic Screen then it works fine.

Still get random Hard Crashes, particularly when using catapults, through-out the game. Enough to make me give it a rest for now, whilst occassionally trolling the forum for a fix.

9600xt, 1 Gig Ram (virtual 2.5GHz), AMD64 3200+, Patch 1.52.

I tend to think its the card but I there is no way I am forking out a couple of hundred dollars on the chance Civ 4 may work correctly.

Boys, I am having the exact same problem!!! :(

Playing multi, every time when the AI comes to me to try to have diplomacy,
my computer reboots...

What the hell is this???

Ye I got that bug to with the v.1.52 patch

For me it happens every time when the German dude asks if there will be peace in out time or not.

My two screens will then have their pictures brake up separately and come back to getter separately before a warning that the graphics driver has crashed. As this happens my comp locks up completely to the point that I cannot get task manager up but I can still move my mouse around until the mouse itself disappears. Clicking on the screen before the cursor disappears will cause the screen to brake up and then come back together again.

The game now is unplayable.

I am running a

CPU: 2800xp AMD64
Mem: 2*256mb DDR 266 Generic
OS: win xp home up to date
GFX: 9800 Pro Atlantis by safire (128mb edition)
Sound: Sound blaster
MB: ASUS K8V-MX-EAYKZ

If you have a save with a reproducible crash, please post it here.

Even if you do not have a save, when you get a crash, please click to send the error report to Microsoft. They get forwarded to Firaxis.

Every time I attempt diplomacy with another player in an online game it freezes.

I have a 6600GT, so I don't think the catalyst drivers will help me!

I only have this problem online, any other time the game works perfectly. This really sucks because diplomacy is a HUGE part of my game.

This has happened for me since the original boxed version.
