we could probably make a list of them right here, so let's do so.

1. on any microsoft products (ex. Microsoft Word) it never tells you the file directory (probably cause they think your so stupid) and you have trouble retrieving files.
2. it constantly crashes
3. you have to piss away time after improper shutdowns, and if you don't your desktop is screwed.
4. internet explorer is pure crap.
5. everything is really complicated
6. now a days they only make stuff for XP
7. safe mode
8. often times they forget to give you stuff (like for me, i had to piss away more
money on a thing they never gave me

9. If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple as that. There are free legal options out there that will allow you to have an operating system and office software. Or if that isn't sufficient, you can purchase a Mac next time around.

Joy.

You're, not your. This example is horrible. First of all, if you install Microsoft Office, you are given the option of what directory you would like to install it in. Second, when you save a file, you are given the option of which directory you want your files to save to; by default it is 'My Documents.' If you still don't know where your files are, you use the search function.

Stop using the computer.

Stop using the computer.

Use Firefox. No? Opera? Netscape? Something else? Stop using the computer.

Switch to UNIX.

I wonder why? Using your logic, it's a horrible operating system that sucks, and Bill Gates needs to die; so why do companies continue to develop for such a crappy operating system? Why do people continue to use these products when there are so many other options out there? WHY?

Would you rather it be called "dangerous mode?"

I'm sorry that you expected Microsoft to give you "stuff;" you can blame the Justice Department for that. But wait, let me get this straight... you hate Microsoft, but you want them to give you a lot of "stuff." So you basically want Microsoft (a company that you claim to hate and disapprove of) to develop more "stuff" so that they can have total market domination and so that you wont have to buy "stuff" from other competitors? :crazyeye:

Seriously, stop using Microsoft. I want you to go download a distrobution of Linux right now. Go on, do it. Or better yet, go spend an assload of money on a Mac. OSX is an easy-to-use operating system that should make it a lot easier for you to do what you want, which, according to you, consists of "stuff."

i don't need a mac. plus you can't run alot of programs on macs, like most games
don't be a spelling police/grammar nazi. It's the freaking internet and i have the right to be lazy. Here's the thing. With Microsoft word, it auto saves into my documents. when i try a different style of saving, i end up saving it in another directory or something. I dunno, but i went back to my documents and it was BLANK.
2-3 kinda defeats teh purpose, don't it?
4 i do use Opera adn Mozilla. Just that alot of things (like java) need IE, which sucks. And, no, not using the comp is just a stupid idea.
back to the game problem. and most programs (instant messengers, internet borwsers, ect) might not work on Unix. besides, some day my father will install Linux.
7 Well I'd rather just have "regular" mode whenever i do improper shut downs.
8 I'm talking about when Microsoft IE had no protection, nor did spybot, or norton. so i got spyware from 1 thing! i don't remember what it is! and i hardly downloaded anything! so, I have to reinstall! whoopee! i need a new disk cause they don't have it in stores! So my father orders something. He works on it, and he doesn't get an instruction thingy (yes, even for a professor for comp science at GMU) and one of the disks was missing,

Java can be installed on mozilla. Your post is pure rant. MS Windows can run fast'n'stable, and many of us here have experienced that.

7. safe mode
What's wrong with safe mode? How the hell do you think we're (notice the correct use of contractions and subject pronouns) supposed to remove spyware without it?
If it's crashing that often, it's proabably some issue with your computer, not windows. Besides, if you hit F8 (IIRC) during start up, it opens a menu in which you can select safe or normal mode.

Jeratin, go easy on the kid.

He is only 11. Do you remember you eleven year old self?

Instead of being snoty, help him understand.

No. If someone doesn't make this kid realize that he's *****ing and moaning for no reason, then no one will and he will continue to show disdain for software and other things without ever learning. He's young, his mind is still shapable. Sometimes going easy on people gets them nowhere.

Blame Microsoft for being so popular.

You also have the right to be ignorant, which is fine and dandy. But guess what? I have the right to not give a crap what you say - however I choose to waive that right and I chose to correct your sloppy post. Live with it. Learn.

Go to the options in Word and change the auto-save options. Next time you do save, click "save as." Oh, but wait, it probably wont work because Microsoft sucks.

LLXerxes said:

If it will get you off the internet, then no, it doesn't. But seriously, if you want a solution to those problems, look into using an NTFS format instead of FAT.

LLXerxes said:

In your case it seems like a brilliant idea. However, like a few others have already stated, java works with many other browsers. In fact, the only thing you will need IE for is to use Windows Update and for some online banking - other than that, any other browser will do everything you need.

I can't wait to hear what you think of Linux once you use it. And how do you know most of those programs wont work on UNIX?

LLXerxes said:

When you do improper shutdowns (which you should avoid in the first place if possible), you have a choice for about 30 seconds - it never forces safe mode on you unless you don't choose anything.

It happens. If you want to blame a developer of software for having holes or not knowing about a new form of malware, I'm sorry for you. What I always found funny was that I have never downloaded a virus or any malacious spyware to my computer using Internet Explorer through the days that it had no "protection" from those holes. If you keep your computer up to date by using Windows Update, and use safe/smart browsing methods, you don't even need to have a spyware scanner or virus scanner installed - but it doesn't hurt to have them.

With all due respect to your father, I've met quite a few CS people who aren't very good with software but are geniuses at coding. I've met quite a few who had no clue how a computer really even worked. CS doesn't mean you know everything about computers.

I'm sorry for being so rude and blunt with you, but unfounded statements of extreme bias aggrivate me - and your constant bombardment of Microsoft, including your threat to "cut Bill Gates' throat" have not made you seem like a very reasonable person.

If you were to produce a well thought out reason for your distaste of Microsoft, their software, or their practices, then I would gladly read it and maybe even agree. Until then, learn to properly use a computer before criticizing everything it entails.

Technically true: most stupid messangers are prolly written for windows and windows binaries don't run on UNIX (wine doesn't count here :p )

But there are usually two good Linux apps for each medicore windows app.
You wanna know what I run on my Windows PC?
For a start: OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, GnuPG and GhostScript all of which are available for linux.
And most of the rest is open source too, only thing I still keep windows for is games (sorry wine fans but it just ain't reliable enough).

And since you mentioned instant messaging: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
If I didn't hate instant messangers so much I would add that to my windows apps list :p

It sounds like you are having problems. you are still on '98, right? Which is in no means a bad OS, its just old. 6 years old, in fact.

I would reccomend re-formatting, and re-installing '98, or, preferably, buying XP. i can't give you a price quote since i don't know it, nor do i know which country you live in and thus the currency, but it should be under 200 bucks Canadian. You might also need to get a new computer, if thats possible.

And ya, Jeratain, he's only 11!!! Go easy on the little guy. Sheesh.

And LL, asking for help here with some of those specific issues, like maybe a decent Virus Scanner, would probably help you a lot.

This has nothing to do with your operating system, it's your COMPUTER, your COMPUTER that is causing problems. I suggest buying a new one, and if you still find that you absolutely hate Windows, load a new operating system (like LINUX).

Btw, ROTFLMAO at the second post!!

Jeratain, way to flex your nerd muscle.

You can rest assured we are all impressed.

No. Being 11 is no excuse. The kid can learn.

And you can rest assured that I could care less what you think since my posts were not aimed at you. "Flexing my nerd muscles" has nothing to do with this. If you think I am posting a reply because I get kicks out of "being hard on" 11 year olds, you are gravely mistaken.

Microsoft's products are generally ok.. they've thrown out the odd stinker or two (Windows ME) but it's largely ok. it's problem is that it's too popular and thus making it a target for hackers. that and also Bill Gates the richest man in the world owns the company.

I depise Microsoft for tying IE into their OS. We will all have to be forced to buy Longhorn to get IE7, and there are still a lot of people running 98 that don't have the latest SP2 installed. This also means that updates only happen when a new OS comes out. Not only is that stupid, but MS is shooting itself in its foot.

Both Opera and FF have catapuled from nowhere into formidable contenders in the span of six to seven years - the last time IE released its latest rendering engine. Look at Opera - coming out with SSR, TVR, a superfast rendering engine, and Gmail support in 7.60. The W3C has finished off HTML and has started into XHTML 2.0. Bottom line is: The Internet changes very, very fast, and MSIE hasn't updated in so many years - it's a dinosaur. It can't innovate or change fast enough for its competition because it's stuck to the OS.

In essence, since IE is the most popular browser, and not everyone can or will buy the latest OS to get the latest IE, IE is dragging the Internet down - web designers still have to cater to its quirks and horrible standards compilance. The Internet can't advance when so many people still use a dinosaur browser.
